The Wit Studio produced anime based on Oshoshio’s gag comedy manga My Deer Friend Nokotan will air next month on a multitude of platforms.
According to showrunners REMOW, Nokotan will start streaming on Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video, ADN, and Anime Onegai. Tokyo MX and BS NTV will broadcast the first episode on the same day starting July 7th.
ABEMA streaming services will first stream the first episode on July 3, and will be available in Japanese an with subtitles in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, French, German, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thai, and Traditional Chinese.
Masahiko Oota, director of Gabriel Dropout, Minami-ke, and Yuru-yuri, will helm the series. Takashi Aoshima will be the head writer, Yasuhiro Misawa is the head music composer, and Ayumu Tsujimura is the character designer.
Megumi Han (Akko from Little Witch Academia) will star as the titular deer girl Noko “Nokotan” Shikanoko. Saki Fujita (Hatsune Miku from the Vocaloid franchise) will voice Torako “Koshitan” Koshi. They along with Fuka Izumi and Rui Tanabe, who voice characters of Meme Bashame and Anko Koshi, will sing the opening theme “Shikairo Days”, while Han and Fujita will sing the ending “Shika-senbei no Uta”.
Rounding up the cast is Neko Nekoyamada, voiced by Love Live’s Yurika Kubo, a cat girl who is the vice president of the student council and is a proclaimed rival of Nokotan, Riku Tanukikōji (Rio Tsuchiya), the school council secretary being shocked by the antics of her peers, and Chiharu Tsubameya (Chinatsu Akasaki), the treasurer who is supposed to be quiet but is a secret otaku.
The story is about a Koshitan, the prim and proper student council president trying to erase her previous reputation as a delinquent Yankee from her previous school, when suddenly, a mysterious girl with deer antlers was seen hanging on an electric pole. Soon after, Koshitan was shocked when Nokotan suddenly transfers to her school as well, while the deer girl tries to expose Koshitan’s past, much to the latter’s dismay. Antics ensue.
My Deer Friend Nokotan began serialization in Kodansha’s shounen manga magazine Shounen Magazine Edge on November 15, 2019, later transferring to Magazine Pocket website in 2023. Five volumes exist so far. Kodansha USA publishes the manga in English.
