You may remember a couple months ago there was a lot of buzz on the return of Mutant League Football via crowdfunding on kickstarter. We reported on the project and everybody seemed pretty stoked about the return of this classic game. Well, it turns out the hype was a lot louder than the actual excitement. The game ending up falling well short of it’s goal, raising only about $150,000 out of $750,000. What went wrong?
As it turns out the creators of the game stated that the majority of negative feedback came from their decision to prioritize the development of the game for mobile devices. The rise of mobile devices continues to be a touchy subject in the traditional/hardcore gaming space. Some are convinced it’s the future of the industry and some are totally against the medium and if what the creators said is true, this certainly applies to fans of Mutant League Football.
Fast Forward to January 2014 and Mutant League Football is apparently ready to rise again and have another go at it. Michael Mendheim, the creator of the new game, said that it will be returning to kickstarter this spring with some substantial changes.
- Much Lower Funding Goal
- Will Focus on PC Development
It’s always nice to see people fess up to their mistakes and improve themselves but was the kickstarter failure a case of push back against mobile as a viable gaming medium or was it just general disinterest in this relic of the past? Obviously only time will tell but make sure to stay turned as we will certainly be covering this when it returns this spring.
