Mushoku Tensei author addresses depiction of slavery

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Mushoku Tensei has been criticized by viewers in recent days after the latest episode where Rudeus buys a slave to make figurines.

Slavery makes an appearance in some form or another in nearly every isekai series with some notable exceptions. Series author Rifujin na Magonote (a pen name) defended the inclusion in their work by elaborating on how Rudeus considered slavery in the fantasy world he now lived in:

ルーデウス、奴隷に対する嫌悪感はあんまりないです。 奴隷全員が例外なく奴隷になる前より不幸というわけでもないので、人さらいは悪だけど、奴隷制度自体は悪とは言い切れないっぽいし、自分の馴染みのない文化に自分の正義を振りかざすまい、って感じです。

Rudeus, I don’t have much hatred for slaves.
Not all slaves are unhappy than they were before they became slaves, so kidnapping is bad, but slavery itself doesn’t seem to be bad, and you shouldn’t flaunt your righteousness in a culture you’re unfamiliar with. That’s what it feels like.

The second season of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation will be a total of 25 episodes over two cour. The first cour premiered on July 2 and we’re only 6 episodes in at the time of writing so there’s plenty more to come.
