Morrowind Rebirth Mod 2.7 Released

When it comes to modding, there seems to be no game more lovingly cared for than Bethesda’s landmark Elder Scrolls game, Morrowind. With the famous graphics-expanding Morrowind Overhaul mod making video cards scream while rendering a game over a decade old, it’s sometimes easy to miss the “other” fan-made expansion to the game. That other mod, “Morrowind Rebirth”, just had another major release, making this 2.7 in the long-running improvement and balancing mod.

For those not in the know, Rebirth focuses primarily on balancing the gameplay, as well as filling in some of the gaps that exist in the game’s logic. Monsters are better equipped, level scaling of enemies is handled better as you become more powerful, and new weapons and armor have been made to allow for more character customization. The complete changelog is rather long, but you can view it here.

The major question people ask, however, is whether you can use Rebirth with the Morrowind Overhaul mod, and that has been addressed by the developers:

Is Morrowind Rebirth compatible with MGSO (Morrowind Graphic and Sound Overhaul)? Yes and no. There’s some things you need to do in order to avoid issues (though you may still experience some issues). Start by downloading MGSO. Follow the instructions provided in the download. Keep in mind that you need to tick the option in each flora region for “Custom Mod”. When you’re done, continue with Morrowind Rebirth. Extract the files to your Morrowind folder as stated in the Morrowind Rebirth readme, included in the download package. If you’re told to “overwrite”, press no (I’ve had a few people reporting that pressing “yes” might cause issues). If everything’s gone smoothly, continue to the last step in the process and deactivate “grass”. There’s also three plugins which comes with MGSO that needs to be removed, “Poorly Placed Object Fix 1.2.esm”, “Morrowind Patch 1.6.5 Beta (BTB Edit).esm” and “Animated Morrowind”. That should be it.

With Skywind gaining attention lately, it’s important to know that the original game is still receiving quite a bit of updates from its devoted fans … many of whom still prefer the old, dice-rolling combat engine present in the older games.

If you’re one of them, you can download Morrowind Rebirth on their Mod DB site.
