Mock News Reel Shows Off Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair

D3 Publisher have released a new 10-minute video for Earth Defense Force 4.1, which imitates the newscasts so prominent in sci-fi movies about supernatural catastrophes. You can watch it above.

The video’s description adds a bit more flavor to the world of EDF. It reads, in part:

In 2025, invaders once again visit the Earth from Forina [Editor’s note: a cute play on the English word “foreigner”]. In order to protect the peaceful planet, the multinational Earth Defense Force military continues to fight the brave fight, day and night.

The EDF had already foreseen the emergence of the strange organism known as Eruginusu [Editor’s note: the name of the kaiju featured in the video], so they built a giant humanoid weapon, the “walking fortress Balaam“, which boasts overwhelming destructive power and endurance. Once introduced into battle, the mecha promptly foiled the enemy.

In addition to the great ravager, the burrows of giant creatures infest the underground. The EDF determined that these threats were best dispatched through use of the multi-legged walking tank known as the Depth Crawler. When the machine was sent into the burrows, the creatures fell into chaos.

Forina had planned a tour of Earth, but they had better cancel their plans and hop on a return flight.

Also recently, new screenshots were published and more gameplay shown off, including of the aforementioned kaiju and mecha, so head over to that update if you missed it.

Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair is a Playstation 4 exclusive, which will be available in Japan as of April 2. Excluding tax, both the packaged and digital download versions have a suggested price of 6,980 yen.
