Straight out of Nintendo’s recent E3 press event, we’ve learned that legendary creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s next game is a steampunk themed, turn based strategy game with action and shooter elements.
Dubbed Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., the game features cartoon cel-shaded graphics and is developed by Intelligent Systems, the team notable for games like Fire Emblem: Awakening, Advance Wars, and so on.
Hitoshi Yamagami, who worked on Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Style Savvy, is producing the game. Paul Patraschu is directing the game alongside Takako Sakai as the game’s art director.
In the game, players will take command of the S.T.E.A.M. unit, a unique army that was created by none other than Abraham Lincoln himself to defend earth against an alien invasion.
Gameplay within Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. plays out from a third person perspective, and players will move through turns. A focus was put on using different viewpoints from various team members, meaning having a good overarching strategy is a key to winning.
The game also utilizes shooter elements in both movement and attacking, using the touch screen for an “intuitive” control scheme. The terrain within the world is described as having lots of depth, and that it reflects the game’s variety of strategy elements.
The combatants within the game function off steam itself, much like the name implies. Each fighter has a boiler that they get steam from, giving them a set number of attacks. The campaign within the game is divided into various missions, each having unique maps.
The character designs within the game are said to be inspired by American comic books, and the developers were inspired by artists like Bruce Timm and Jack Kirby. The protagonist’s weapons are designed for the various abilities built into it, as well as the animal motif that each character’s personality is based off of.
We have the first official blurbs, screenshots, and box art for the game in our follow up piece here.
