NFTs and blockchain technology have been a controversial topic to say the least. Now Mojang have officially struck down any chance they’ll appear in Minecraft.
The developer posted an official statement on their stance of NFTs and blockchain. The short summery of it being they do not support them in their game.
“To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset,” the statement reads.
Their primary reason for being against putting in NFTs within their game, or even allowing third-party servers from being able to do so, is inclusivity. In Mojang’s view, it goes against their values of creating an inclusive community and playing together.
This likely stems from the fac that NFTs generally revolve around resources that are made artificially scarce. The concept itself is one they believe is at odds with how they develop Minecraft, as this would “create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots”.
It’s also noted that they do not have plans on implementing blockchain technology. However, Mojang does state they are keeping an eye on how this technology grows and they may consider in the future implementing it if they believe it “allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming”.
