miHoYo invested in an experimental fusion reactor

An interesting bit of news this week is that Genshin Impact developer miHoYo invested in an experimental fusion reactor.

The news that miHoYo invested in an experimental fusion reactor comes (via PanDaily) alongside other co-investor NIO Capital, a Chinese investment firm, with the full total invested equating to nearly 400 million yuan (roughly $63 million).

The investments have gone to a company called Energy Singularity, who are trying to build a “small tokamak experimental device based on high temperature superconducting material, and advanced magnet systems that can be used for the next generation of high-performance fusion devices.”

A tokamak is a plant-based concept for nuclear fusion, so in other words miHoYo invested in trying to build a nuclear fusion reactor. The prototype uses plasma confined in magnetic donut-shaped fields, known as a torus. Many believe this is the most feasible concept for an attainable nuclear fusion reactor design.

It’s worth noting miHoYo’s actual motto “tech otakus save the world” is now literally coming to life, should this new fusion reactor design turn into the real deal. miHoYo previously invested into a lab study for brain to computer interfaces, much like our spaceman son’s other company doing the same thing – Neuralink.

Despite the decades of research and attempts to make a nuclear fusion reactor instead of a nuclear fission reactor (which are the nuclear reactors we have now), a fusion reactor hasn’t been achievable to date.

Many researchers point to nuclear fusion being even more advantageous than fission, and vastly superior to the “green” alternatives, which produce a fraction of power with more materials and space requirements.

miHoYo has lots of cash due to the popularity of their games like Genshin Impact, which just released its next big 2.5 update for all supported platforms.

Genshin Impact is available and free-to-play on Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store and official website), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, iOS, and coming soon to Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, you can find our review here (we recommend it!)
