The game will be released for WiiU, Ps4 and Xbox One on June 21st, 2016 in North America & Asia while the rest of the world will have to wait a couple more days for June 24th, 2016.

Was Gunvolt actually that bad? I haven’t played it, but I’ve really only heard about the cuts made to the western versions, not that the core game was particularly bad. Not that that would surprise me.

For a lot of us, it was never about the actualy delays. It was really about how such a game like this would get delayed twice (3 times if you count the Deep Silver partnership) when it was already “done”, and that the game itself just wasn’t that great to begin with.

Mighty No. 9’s Fifth Release Date Finally Announced, Two Years of Delays Not Enough For Simultaneous Launch With Portable Versions

Seriously, let’s clarify something. Mighty No. 9 will have been “complete” for over a year before it launched. “Complete” being the word Inafune used to describe Mighty No. 9 when he was hastily defending the launch of his second nostalgia-grubbing Kickstarter before his first one had even shipped.

I’ve met Inafune. I’ve shaken his hand and I have his autograph. His work on this planet has influenced me more than anyone else on Earth. I donated $80 to Mighty No. 9, I’ve had access to the game for two years now. I’ve prayed that it would shape up visually, mechanically, and in every other regard you could name.

With that said, a word of advice to anyone looking at the game:

    Don’t. Bother.

Alright, so that was two words.

And for those unaware, the original plan, back in 2013, was to release the Vita and 3DS editions after the console versions, and two years of delays still wasn’t enough to get them ready for a simultaneous launch. Come to think of it, we haven’t seen any proof that these two versions even exist. Please correct me if I’m wrong on that, I’d hate to think that Inafune took the money and ran. Well, that he took more of the money and ran.

  19. NathanEH
    May 2, 2016 at 12:26 pm

Yes, it was pretty bad. They tried to reinvent the wheel with how the player deals with enemies, and like Mighty No. 9’s solution it could have used a lot more thought.

You have to shoot pins into enemies then just hold ‘R’ until it dies. That’s every enemy in the game and every boss as well. To add insult to injury, the pins do deal damage just so little that there’s no way you could rely on Mega Man skills or reflexes to play the game with them. The level and enemy designs were not created in tandem, or maybe they were and the designers just didn’t care about the fake difficulty that they presented they player.

Much like Mighty No. 9 the bosses only take so much damage before they enter a post-damage state. Very few bosses have attacks that can be anticipated before you get hit by them. The final boss was particularly horrid, though I only played the game through once so I can’t remember the details. There was one attack where he just throws you off the stage with no warning. Two others that I know personally had no idea how to deal with either and just got lucky like I did and won by hoping he didn’t use the attack.

Then there’s the Tumblr pronoun bullshit that they shoved into the English script. “Xhe Xher Xhemself” and all that mental nonsense, repeated by the characters way more than necessary throughout the level just to drive the point home.

Between all of these factors, I’m laugh anytime I see news on the sequel being made. I have no idea who a sequel could possibly be for. The game was atrocious.

Ah finally this whole saga will be over….if we are to believe that Comcept will actually deliver. Remember, these are the guys that:

    – Told retailers about the game not being released in Sept 2015, lied to backers that the game was still on schedule, held the Red Ash campaigns, and then released the delay news after the campaigns were done (or near the end of it).

    – Gave out an update only weeks prior to the Feb 2016 release date about another delay. There were no updates or news prior to this to inform and “warn” backers that the game may be delayed again.

So yeah, communicating to backers and committing to a release date isn’t exactly their strong points!

At any rate, a little happy and sad that it’s finally gonna be over. Happy that we can finally put this whole trainwreck behind us, but sad that the amount of entertainment said trainwreck gave us will be ending as well. And here I was hoping to visit their Osaka office in the fall to ask for a refund in person!

As for the game itself, I’m sure it’ll sell decently well and that reviews will mostly be positive. But personally I find it to be a very average game with a dash mechanic that gets old quick. So for those times you may have seen me said the game “sucks”, it’s really me being disappointed that an all-star dev team couldn’t even come up with a decent Mega Man clone. If you’re at all interested in the game it’s definitely not the worst thing you can waste your money on, but I do highly suggest to wait for reviews first.

Nepotism isn’t exactly a new thing nor is it something people get upset about, but it was clear she wasn’t qualified for the job. Having very little to no knowledge about the Mega Man franchise didn’t help but isn’t exactly a must for being a Community Manager. But it was clear by the way she conducted herself in the forums and on twitter that she lacked the professionalism and people skills.

As for “character designer”, what a mess that was. Here we have her claiming to be designing robots or at least helping Kimo with it, and then Comcept with a “official statement” that she wasn’t.

Honestly though, Dina was only a small problem with the project. However it was because of her that many of the team’s flaws were highlighted (i.e. lack of communication, lack of respect for backers)

I feel sorry for Mighty No. 9. What was suppose to be a successor to the legendary Mega Man franchise is now, no matter how good it actually is, will just be remembered as the game that was delayed for over a year and has the most bitter “fanbase.” Seriously, I think half of the people here are going to write off the game for no other reason than “It was delayed too long 0/10, WORSE GAME OF THE YEAR!”

Let’s keep in mind the game was made by Inti-Creates, whom thus far I have not played a BAD game from them.

  95. Grey
    May 2, 2016 at 11:43 pm

At this point, the only thing that might save this game’s reputation, outside of less-than-subtle pushing of ad revenue into south-of-honest gaming sites to influence reviews, is if it came out and it was amazing. Jaw dropping. The perfect mixture of old school and innovation the Mega Man fans have been hoping for.

But it’s not going to be.

It’s going to be average. It’s going to be okay. It’ll be on roughly the same level of good as a one-man dev team’s Mega Man clone fan game. Neither hilariously awful nor particularly great. In the end, the game itself will be virtually forgotten and only the numerous controversies around it will live on.

The warning signs about the whole project in general were already there when censorsh… whoops I meant community manager Dina Karam was making all those “pro-feminist” comments and tweets, all you had to do was look into her Twitter feed and it full of SJW feminist nonsense. An example being that she was heavily against the camera angles in Bayonetta.

People did try to inform and warn the backers of this, but the Megaman fanboys and backers just refused to accept it and even insulted back.

What a shit-show this project has turned out to be. When the game comes out, it better be something special to redeem itself.

    Yeah, probably.

Would’ve been funny if that line just came out of nowhere, oh well.

I’m thinking about selling my code. I lost my interest into this game pretty much.

I think “they” had differing opinions behind the scenes, and someone with authority finally brought the hammer down.

The warning signs have been there since day one for anyone who was actually looked into Inafune rather than taking his oppressed dev narrative at face value and also thinking that he was involved with the actual game design work of Mega Man 2 rather than just being a illustrator. Combine that with Inti Creates who have been meh for years and you get plenty of warning signs before that PR disaster was brought on board which turned this project into the perfect storm of crowdfunded game fuckups that bank off nostalgia.

Why did they even announce the game for the 3DS to begin with? Was it just supposed to be a strictly 2D game or did they assume they weren’t going to be using Unreal Engine 3?

280 CDN myself. I have no troubles admitting I screwed up giving a bunch of money, but I never would have guessed that something with so much hype going for it would be the perfect example of how NOT to run a kickstarter.

I rarely try to do things like avoid particular developers, but in this case I’ll make an exception.
