Microsoft Unveils Project Scorpio: A 4K-Capable, VR-Ready Xbox One Successor

With Sony gearing up for a VR and 4K ready Playstation 4 replacement and Nintendo toiling away at making the NX something that can visually compete with its game industry adversaries, it makes sense that Microsoft would follow suit and make a new version of their console as well. Today at E3, those plans were formally unveiled in the form of Project Scorpio, a newer model of the Xbox One that – according to Microsoft – will be the most powerful console on the market at the time of its planned 2017 release.

Sporting an 8 core CPU and an impressive 6 teraflops of computing power, Project Scorpio aims to bring console gaming more in line with the kind of quality high-end PC gamers currently experience.

Microsoft reassured owners of the original Xbox One (As well as the newly announced Xbox One S) that future games would work across all platforms, but that better visual fidelity would be unlocked when playing those games on Project Scorpio.

An example was given by Phil Spencer, who mentioned Halo 5 and its frequent dips in resolution that it employs to maintain a steady 60 frames per second. According to Spencer, Project Scorpio will not have that problem, since Halo 5 will maintain the highest resolution at all times when running on the new hardware.

This means that it’s highly likely many previously released Xbox One titles will benefit from Project Scorpio’s processing power and gain well-deserved framerate and resolution upgrades.

Of course, the main draw is the new system’s support of 4K and VR gaming, which it has primarily been developed for. No doubt 2017 will be an interesting year for gamers, with all three major console manufacturers releasing new hardware.

That is more what I am talking about. 6 Teraflops is just over the GTX 980’s stated 5 teraflops.

Cant let the gap in power between PC and consoles get too wide.

Besides a few visual upgrades/VR I don’t see that much incentive to buy the scorpio or the newer PS4. Those games are still going to be available on the older versions.

Pretty much. I mean, Sony has said that the 4.5 is mainly to get the hardware strong enough for 4K, and if you don’t have a 4K TV, you don’t have much a point. Even less if you’re like me and don’t care about VR.

Xbox 2013 > Next Gen should of been 2018
    Ps4 2014 > next gen should of been 2019

The motherfuckers are trying to sneak in a ‘new’ generation aren’t they?

But seriously, given the lack of exclusives (Nintendo is the exception whatever you may think of them), especially good ones, on either system why are people even buying consoles instead of a budget PC, which has a ton of other uses on top of gaming, and everything through Steam or GoG is pretty much plug and play anyway?

It used to be that consoles were a good deal, both as a 5 year long investment with a ton of exclusive software, and for plug and play reasons, but at this point I think the only reason they keep on selling is people’s ignorance, when it comes to PC gaming, and that irrational intimidating feeling about how complicated, it is to build or play on PC.

If these “upgraded” consoles tank, this will become a failed experiment that won’t soon be repeated. If they sell well, it instantly becomes the new standard for consoles. Make your choice, gamers.

  44. Sebastian Mikulec

    June 13, 2016 at 6:27 pm

4K-Capable is such a bait-and-switch. “Technically” it’s correct since the console will be able to playback videos at 4K, but people hear 4K-Capable and assume that games will be playable at 4K and that’s just flat out false. Even a top of the line current PC with a $1000 Extreme Edition CPU and a GTX 1080 struggles with 4K (you can play at 4K but not with all the bells and whistles if you want smooth framerate). There is a zero percent chance that the new consoles that launch next year come with hardware that comes even close to top of the line current PC (it’s financially impossible to make a console with that much power and still sell it at a reasonable price) and top of the line PC can only max out games at 1440p and only when those games are reasonably well optimized.

  45. LurkerJK
    June 13, 2016 at 7:27 pm

Why they are announcing it so early ?, Why would anyone buy the now obsolete consoles knowing there is a better one coming ?

they buried “current” gen by announcing this, you only need the ps4.5 announcement to put the rest of the nails on the coffin, whats the point of killing them without having the new product on sale ?

  46. LurkerJK
    June 13, 2016 at 7:43 pm

Same goes for VR, the scorpio and the ps4.5 might be able to run tech demos at the recommended 90hz, they might even run last year’s AAA games (in low to medium res) at the barely minimum 60hz but you will immediately hit a power barrier for newer games

In a year or two you will have this same problem all over again, PCs will have the 1080’s successor finally scratching 4k and running VR properly while the consoles lag a decade behind

Plus at a 5 year life, with $50 a year subs, that also adds up to a mean 250 extra per console.
    Just not payed up front.

  55. Zombie_Barioth
    June 14, 2016 at 1:15 am

Well for one thing, the budget PC is only really doable if you built it yourself, which not everybody wants to do. Not to mention the prebuilt PC market is shrinking and losing out to mobile devices, making doing more a lot less relevant to a lot of people.

Consoles are better designed as a family system. Everything is easily shared between users, including the online subscription, which also gives the “free” games more value.

I did the math a while back, and the cost difference isn’t very big unless you only really buy games dirt-cheap, say $10 or under. That was a $600 PC though, games being $50, 5 per year, it was no more than $90 cheaper. That’d be maybe $200-$250 less for a “console killer” for one person.

  60. Zombie_Barioth
    June 14, 2016 at 1:59 pm

Don’t you just love it when people moronically take things out of context?

I think you missed the keyword there being “families”. Don’t know about you, but I remember renting games as a kid, which was easily $5-$7 per week for most places. $5/month is peanuts in comparison for what would hopefully keep your kids occupied.

You also missed what was obviously meant as close to an apples to apple comparison as possible. No shit there are sales, consoles have them as well. That $10 and under range is the only area they don’t easily hit. The days of steam blowing everybody else away with sales are long gone, even the consoles match them now.

  61. GrimFate
    June 14, 2016 at 6:21 pm

If they thought Sony was going to announce the PS4.5, they may have been trying to preempt them. If PS4 is the better console right now and it was officially announced that a new one was coming, why buy an Xbox at all? With absolutely nothing to show of it and barely any real info, it’s likely a strategic move.

At least if you’re in the market for a new console NOW, you know that in the long run either platform is probably fine. That is, the processing power difference between the new consoles will hopefully not be as pronounced as it is now, so you can choose whichever platform appeals to you.

  62. GrimFate
    June 14, 2016 at 6:29 pm

Cost. It will likely be difference in cost.

Microsoft says Scorpio is 6 teraflops of power. Current Xbox One seems to be around 1.3. At more than 4x the processing power, the price difference between the S and Scorpio will likely be a couple hundred at least.

The S costs $300 at the moment and could possibly drop by the end of next year. So when the Scorpio drops, you could be looking at, say, $250 for a 500GB S and $400-$450 for a 500GB Scorpio.

  64. GrimFate

Fair call, but since the Xbox One was in development, Microsoft’s CEO has changed, as has the head of Xbox. They are also desperately trying to catch up to Sony this generation, meaning they are doing as much as they can to appeal to gamers. I’m personally sticking with them until all these factors prove to be meaningless.

  65. GrimFate
    June 14, 2016 at 7:13 pm

I imagine if they actually have 4k games on this console refresh, it will be the same issue as 1080p now; the settings will be reduced vs. PC, and the framerate will be targeted at 30fps. Plus developing for fixed hardware usually allows for better optimization.

But I can’t remember how good the GTX1080 is at keeping games above 30fps at 4k, so it might be impossible for the price point the consoles will be aiming for. (And Polaris is very new; I wonder if the new consoles will actually be using it.)
