Microsoft Purchased Minecraft Because It Was Perfect for Hololens

Last fall, Microsoft put out a staggering $2.5 billion to wholly acquire Minecraft from developer Mojang. We haven’t really known why they bought the game, other than its absurd success across the globe. However, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed to the New York Times they bought it for virtual reality.

“Let’s have a game that, in fact, will fundamentally help us change new categories,” Nadella said. “HoloLens was very much in the works [when Microsoft announced the deal last year], and we knew it.”

It all makes sense now, as Microsoft had a pretty cool looking Minecraft demo for their reveal of Hololens, their augmented reality headset. It’s still a work in progress, but you’ve got to admit the possibilities are kind of overwhelming.
