Here’s some pretty amazing news for Xbox 360 fans still waiting/wanting to jump to the console’s successor, the Xbox One – Microsoft is looking at plans to actually release an official emulator that will run Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One.

The news comes via partner development lead Frank Savage, who confirmed the news at Microsoft’s Build developer conference last week, via Kotaku. He said:

“There are, but we’re not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately. It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there’s nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself.”

The former Xbox boss Don Mattrick had famously said that backwards compatibility on Xbox One is “backwards thinking,” among other completely ludicrous statements he made during the PR fiasco the system faced pre-launch. Later, Microsoft’s senior director Albert Penello said that the system could eventually offer the service using its Azure Cloud servers.

Recently, Ben Vanik, a hobbyist who is a fan of emulation, uploaded a video showing off his Xbox 360 emulation engine that ran Frogger 2 on a Windows PC. The service would not be coming out to the public when it’s finished, as he doesn’t want to condone piracy.
