Microsoft confirms Xbox handheld is in development

Microsoft has finally and officially confirmed they are planning to release an Xbox handheld of some kind, after months of teases and rumors.

News of an Xbox handheld comes from Xbox Gaming boss Phil Spencer, though he made it clear such a device is still years from release. For now, they’re focusing on making the Xbox app better on existing handhelds.

Spencer said (via Bloomberg) the “expectation is that we would do something” in the handheld gaming space, though the purported Xbox handheld is years away.

Furthermore, Spencer said the hardware teams at Xbox are working on prototypes and considering what they might do, focusing their vision of an Xbox handheld on what they’re learning from the market.

“Longer term, I love us building devices,” Spencer said. “And I think our team could do some real innovative work, but we want to be informed by learning and what’s happening now.”

Microsoft is likely planning an Xbox handheld to compete with Nintendo’s forthcoming Nintendo Switch successor – which rumors say will naturally be a hybrid device like its predecessor that you can dock to a TV or take on the go.
