Nintendo has officially announced Metroid Prime 4. Featured above, you can view the game’s teaser trailer.
While details are currently scarce, it’s been confirmed that the game will not be made by Retro Studios, and instead is being developed by a newly formed team in Japan.
In a press release from Nintendo, Metroid series producer Kensuke Tanabe is quoted as saying:
Metroid Prime 4 (Working Title) returns to the first-person adventure roots of the original Metroid Prime game and introduces a new storyline that ties together the events of the Metroid Prime universe and takes the storyline in new directions.
Metroid Prime 4 is currently in early development exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

2D Metroid plx.
No_Good_Names_Ever
June 13, 2017 at 12:30 pmBecause they kept failing hard so they threw this out in defeat since Prime is the most popular game that they can get the original team. This is their white flag of defeat.

June 13, 2017 at 12:40 pmThe only thing announced this E3 I give an actual fuck about.
Though I wouldn’t mind a proper 2D return, I loved the Prime series and as long as they don’t fuck it up, by making Samus a feminist or some such shit, and the gameplay follows the previous games, is another worthy reason for owning a Switch.
Shattno
June 13, 2017 at 12:41 pmI think there is room for both. I hope they make a new 2D one as well.

June 13, 2017 at 12:52 pmGuess they’re just pulling whatever shit out their asses in a desperate attempt to get former fans back on board, even if it’s unlikely they reach the greatness of the first two Primes with what remains of Retro Studios.
Uncle Ocelot
June 13, 2017 at 12:53 pmHope not, Retro’s last game came out in 2014, and was finished in 2013. I’m guessing the lack of gameplay is because Nintendo said the show is focused on 2017 stuff.

June 13, 2017 at 1:39 pmWhy is it even called Prime 4 is Other M made Prime and Prime 2 non-cannon? Kind of pointless.
Uncle Ocelot
June 13, 2017 at 1:39 pmTurns out Retro isn’t making this.
Uncle Ocelot
June 13, 2017 at 1:40 pmJust make Other M non-canon instead, nobody will complain.

June 13, 2017 at 1:43 pmThey said everything shown was for 2017/2018 didn’t they? Unless that was in regards to Pokemon specifically.

June 13, 2017 at 2:22 pmTGS for a trailer, next E3 for some gameplay. Probably will be delayed like Breath of the Wild.
Yamato-san
June 13, 2017 at 2:36 pmTo be fair, Prime is probably Nintendo’s only attempt at doing 3rd-person shooters. And it does surprisingly well despite their competition totally dominating in the genre (though likely due at least partially to brandname recognition).
Nagato
June 13, 2017 at 2:44 pmWonder who’ll be making this then, if they even have a team working on it already.
DrearierSpider
June 13, 2017 at 2:52 pmHope it doesn’t turn into a BotW situation where it’s a launch title for their next console because they took so damn long making it.
Shattno
June 13, 2017 at 2:56 pmIsn’t it a first person shooter? And it depends on what you mean with competition, the Prime games are kind of unique, there’s lots of shooters but few with metroidvania stuff in them.
Yamato-san
June 13, 2017 at 2:59 pmAh, right. I meant to say 1st. ^^’

June 13, 2017 at 3:43 pmI guess this pretty much confirms Retro is probably working on more Donkey Kong.

June 13, 2017 at 6:26 pmIf you told me this news a year or two ago, I’d be ecstatic.
I have so little faith in Nintendo making a new Metroid game now that I can’t take this announcement seriously. They’ll fuck it up somehow.
chaoguy
June 13, 2017 at 7:07 pmDepends how well the Switch does. I can’t see it doing so poorly that they rush a new console. Then again, I thought the same for the Wii U.
chaoguy
June 13, 2017 at 7:08 pmI hate to agree, but you have a point.
Retro Studios was often spoken in the same breath when people wished for MP4. But they’d have mentioned them now as a selling point- right?

June 13, 2017 at 7:45 pmFYI: Retro is not making this game. It’s a “new” studio, but it does indeed have the same producer as the other games.

June 13, 2017 at 8:51 pmOther M is already noncannon. It literally contradicts the entire series. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3f93a80d9d1f38a0613b455fb81ad18b11cd86ce75b5ca1700b16ce745802397.png

June 13, 2017 at 9:33 pmA bit early to say that in the first year isn’t it? I mean it’s not like they did that with the last few consoles and actually I hope they take there time with this so it’s jammed pack.

June 13, 2017 at 9:35 pmI glad this is switch than anything else since It’s portable and will use pointer controls over joystick. Not like I would get to control it with mouse and keyboard either.
Zombie_Barioth
June 13, 2017 at 11:37 pmActually, it would be the other way around. BotW likely took so long specifically because it was made a launch title. The Switch port came later, necessitating a delays.
They did the same thing with Twilight Princess.

June 26, 2017 at 6:59 pmSee other comment string for short answer. Even if it was Retro Studios, I think the original team that made the first Prime isn’t even there anymore.
After enduring Other M, Federation Force and its minigame, Nintendo taking down AM2R and then putting up their own version from a company that I personally do -not- enjoy the games of at all, of course I’m going to be skeptical. And they don’t even want to develop it in-house, just pass it off to some other unnamed company we know nothing about.
And you’re asking what can go wrong with this?
