I had the chance to play The Good Mood Creators’ Mekazoo at this year’s Game Developers Conference.
The game is a platformer that puts you in control of five different mekanimals, but you can only control two at a time in each level. Each mekanimal has their own movement type and abilities, and they all feel quite amazing to control.
I have to make a point of how gorgeous the game’s visuals and music are, as the entire thing just shines with polish. I definitely got a mix of a Sonic the Hedgehog meets Banjo Kazooie vibe, and I mean that in the sense that Mekazoo handles brilliantly for a platformer.
The game definitely encourages free-flowing movement, across the five different mekanimals. Each mekanimal is quite different, and they include: the fast armadillo, the acrobatic frog, the jumpy wallaby, a tank-like panda, and a flying pelican.
The story within Mekazoo is focused on the mekanimals trying to restore balance to the mekasphere, following the rampage of the insectoids, who have been transformed into mekanimal bosses. You’ll have to defeat these bosses in order to succeed.
Between the cannons that fire you across levels to the armadillo’s ball form enabling you to speed through corners and ramps, Mekazoo just screams appreciation of classic platformers – while still being its own adventure.
I have only good vibes from Mekazoo – I sincerely wish I could’ve played more. I’m sort of at a loss for words, mostly because the game is a true love-letter to fans of classic, addicting plaformers. By that, I mean that simply playing it is a joy, and quite the experience.
Mekazoo is on schedule to launch across PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox One, and PC some time later this year.
