Mega Man Fan Acquires Never Before Seen Animation Cells

Mega Man

A Mega Man fan on Twitter has managed to come into possession of seemingly never-before-seen animation cells and possibly other materials. The cells appear to be for a scrapped Mega Man anime series.

Twitter user @ProtoDude posted on January 23rd that he had “won” an assortment of animation cells and possibly other material. ProtoDude alleges that the animation cells might be an early version of the eventual Japanese-American cartoon series joint produced by Ruby-Spears, Ashi Productions, Ocean Productions, and Capcom.

ProtoDude points out that the animation material he received follows some of the trends present in the Ruby-Spears cartoon. Notably Cut Man, Guts Man, and Proto Man as the primary villains, similar to the 1994 cartoon.

The acquisition of the animation materials was crowdfunded beginning on January 5th. He was initially vague about what the crowdfunding was for, but reasonably so as a more public crowdfunding venture in 2018 had allegedly been sabotaged by Japanese fans.

The animation style presented on the cells is drastically different from the muscular “Americanized” version present in the Ruby-Spears cartoon. However it also appears to predate the cuter style of the animation in Mega Man 8 while having more in common with it.

ProtoDude has said on Twitter that he intends to scan and upload all of the materials for fans to inspect and will be investigating the history of the materials.
