Massive Custom Minecraft Map Offers Realistic Terrain

With the still-ongoing popularity of Minecraft, there’s a number of fan projects that have come up over the years ranging from custom mods, texture packs, and more. Custom maps are also popular, and the above image is actually from a massive custom Minecraft map that offers realistic terrain and regions.

The new map is called Kythor and it was created by Planet Minecraft user qwryzu in the span of two months, but was made with years of experience on the World Machine and World Painter toolsets. You can find the custom map here.

Spanning a massive 16 square kilometers, Kythor includes four continents and various biomes like forests, swamps, mountains, deserts, and more. There’s a focus on having open spaces throughout to encourage users to build their own creations wherever they see fit.

“I intentionally made this map with large open spaces for building, specifically with mods (shoutout Immersive Railroading gang),” qwryzu said. ?It is not the most detail dense map I have ever made, as I hope that the map serves as a good backdrop for large builds.

He added, “The Northwest continent is mostly a giant sand dune surrounded by desert mountains. This continent also contains savannah and rolling hills with lakes on its Southern edges. The Northeast continent is half a giant swamp and half a rolling redwood forest. The Southwest continent is a long forested continent with a volcanic mountain range running down the center. The Southeast Continent, the largest, contains a large uplifted and tilted plateau on top of a giant flat plain with rivers running through it.”

It’s worth pointing out the Kythor map was made on Minecraft version 1.12.2 and thus the world height changes in version 1.17 might cause issues – but it should work with any version of Minecraft.

Minecraft is available for Windows PC, Linux, Mac (all via the official website) Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Android, iOS, Amazon Fire, Amazon Fire, and Fire TV. The game also supports Samsung Gear VR and Oculus on certain platforms.
