We’ve learned (via Reuters) that a mass shooting at this year’s Pokemon World Championships has been prevented.
The shooting would have been carried out by two men who were linked to violent threats made on social media – which turned out to be directed to attendees of the tournament.
The pair involved 18-year-old Kevin Norton and 27-year-old James Stumbo, both arrested under suspicion of illegally possessing an AR-15 rifle, a shotgun, and hundreds of bullets.
Norton and Stumbo were stopped from entering the event’s location on Thursday, at Boston’s Hynes Convention Center. Detectives later found they had a 12-gauge shotgun, an AR-15 rifle, several hundred rounds of ammunition, and a hunting knife in their car, which they transported from Iowa.
The men lacked a license to carry the guns and were arrested at their nearby hotel in Saugus on Friday, under suspicion they had illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, amongst other related charges.
While the suspects couldn’t be reached for a comment, they are to be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court. The Pokemon World Championships ran from August 21st through Sunday, August 23rd.
