Mass Effect: Andromeda is “Totally Softcore Space Porn,” has Full Frontal Nudity

Now that Mass Effect: Andromeda has gone gold, fans and skeptics alike are wondering how the final product is shaping up. Naturally many are wondering just how many aliens you can do the horizontal tango with, and just how explicit those sexual encounters are getting in the franchise of late.

BioWare’s Aaryn Flynn took to Twitter in response to various fans, and his description of the game’s sexual acts was pretty straightforward:

“Yes it’s totally softcore space porn,” Flynn said in response to a fan. He went a step further and said that fans should bear note the game’s ESRB rating description went changed. “Remember. We lost the ‘partial nudity’ rating and got full ‘nudity’,” Flynn said.

Previously, Mass Effect series producer Michael Gamble said that you could bang “so many” of the game’s characters, going a step further saying that “the banging is pretty good.”

Well, it sounds like you can have sex with practically everyone in the game at this point. What do you guys think? Is the Mass Effect series going too far in the number of orifices you can have your way with? Sound off in the comments below!

Mass Effect: Andromeda is launching on March 21st in North America and March 23rd in Europe across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Why make a good game when you just put fully nude sex scenes instead? The Tumblr crowd loves that shit.

Has full frontal nudity, but character is wearing a bra in image. Anyway I will be disappointed if the intimate scenes are reserved to only the humanoid like characters, where’s your romance options with Cthulhu tentacle covered aliens?

I don’t know, not much scifi I can think of so they might be able to recover that much at least but overall; they shat the bed too fucking early for the casual audience to really get tied down. If Andromeda doesn’t end up selling; Bioware will be the next for EA to finish off since Dice has Star Wars games to keep them alive.

Dice also has Battlefield, which BF1 saw a massive resurgence in popularity for due to actually being good again for once.

People have been saying Bioware was “on the chopping block” for some time now. Honestly, I don’t think the moral busybodys at Bioware would allow it. That, and they still have The Old Republic printing money for them.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say sex scenes are not the reason why anyone would want to buy Mass Effect: Andromeda. If nudity and sex is what you’re after, then why wouldn’t you spend that money on actual porn instead?

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve got nothing against sex in video games just like I’ve got nothing against sex in movies or TV shows. But if your attempting to make the inclusion of sex and/or nudity as a central selling point for your product, then that typically means you are aware that the product itself is lackluster in the first place.

Let’s be honest… Unless you played Bioware games for their characters, you went else where after Baldur’s Gate II. Neverwinter Nights was garbage, the only good part about Knights of the Old Republic was the twist. Mass Effect *was* good though, until the ending of Mass Effect 3.

I somehow missed Baldur’s Gate. The Bioware game I like the most is Jade empire though.I had no problem with Mass Effect 3’s ending but I hated the microtransactions.Inquisition is mostly awful.DA2 could’ve been good if they spent more time on it.I agree that the twist was the high point of that game. But KotOR,just like NWN,have some amazing sequels.NWN2 and KotOR 2 are some of my favorites RPG’s of all time.Of course they are made by Obsidian.

Truly? The only good part about the old republic was the twist? To be honest, that was the worst part of the game for me, as it was something I immediately called when the protagonist began having those flashback dreams.

I don’t like twists when they’re so apparent from the get-go, I at least want to do a bit of speculation before ti happens.

As for the early era of Bioware games, the ‘low’ that has become the norm for their titles has always been there in characters and questlines. Characters such as Jaheira or Aeriea are some of the most hamfisted ones I’ve come across in order to ‘force’ a romance upon the player, and it happens immediately at the start. Anonem, Korgan, Mazzy are are another few down there with the worst characters you’re able to find in an RPG.

But then there are characters such as Keldorn, Valygar, Viconia and Cernd that offer some decent development and are definitely the hightlights of BG2, in terms of companion characters.

In regards to Mass Effect, the first one was the only good one. Because it offered a grand scope to its narrative and was in a very true sense an ‘epic’, the sequels were just masturbatory experiences that was for the most part focused on the interactions with the crew. “We’ll bang, okay?”

But sex is progressive to them. At least that’s the impression I’ve been under. There’s a reason as to why Inquisition was a big sitcom fuckfest, and praised for it.

Tough this, seems to me, to be a corporate decision rather than a political one, since they’ve seen the success of The Witcher, for instance.

  54. AnarKreig

    February 27, 2017 at 6:52 pm

To be honest, the alterations they did, in spite of a downgrade in attraction, are more distinct. And I get the feeling they’re trying to make their characters distinct by making them pretty and flawed. I would’ve thought Jayde Rossi was the actress who lent her likeness to Lara Croft instead of Ryder, if they had not committed to these changes.

It’s something I’ve noticed as of late, female characters tend to have less detail to their visage than their male counterparts. Lots of the samey faces everywhere.

That’s not to say it’s not possible to both make a distinct face and an attractive face for a female character, as The Witcher games has proven most prominently.

It’s funny how all of the characters have the same bodies, too. In the instances of Male Shepard and the gay romance interest, Steve in Mass Effect 3. When the clothes came off they had identical spots of moles and the exact same muscle mass.

It’s in particular funny when you hear from the people that hold Bioware up as these prophetic progressives that other games just give one bodytype to women.

They’ve been doing that for ages. It’s an old practice they haven’t given up from back when they made real RPGs. In Dragon Age, if you actually pay attention, you’ll notice that a majority of the alternate races just have human bodies that are just “squished” or “stretched” instead of making whole new models. It works for things like Elves since they’re supposed to look like really weird humans, but for Dwarves and Qnari it just seems really lazy. Especially when they dropped the CRPG aspect with 2 and just made it just another lazy queued combat WRPG.

Uhm, the game has been very profitable. It’s the second-largest US-based MMO in the world behind WoW and in the top 5 most profitable MMOs of 2016. (WoW, Lineage I, SWTOR, TERA, B&S)

I doubt EA will ever truly let Bioware “Go”. In fact, I’d argue Bioware is already in it’s “dead” state. It’s a brand, and EA uses it for it’s brand, not necessarily the games that it chums out. So long as that brand has recognition, they’ll keep using it. That said, the brand has already been tested a good deal, so the success or failure of ME:A might finally make or break it. Still, even then I expect what EA would end up doing is just cutting their Single Player AAA privileges and relegate them to updating SWTOR and focusing on churning out EA’s staple QUALITY mobile games.

TERA has been one of the top earning MMOs in the world for years, pretty much ever since it went F2P. Cosmetics on attractive character models are a powerful combo for making money, especially when you lock them behind lockbox RNG which whales with money to burn are all too eager to gobble up.

Plus, until Blade and Soul came out, TERA was the only MMO on the market that had a legitimately action-based combat system, and it still is the closest MMOs have ever gotten to something akin to a proper fighter-like system yet. Every other attempt to create action combat in MMOs has either leaned too close to traditional or been too difficult for players to adapt to (IE, Wildstar, Black Desert).

TL;DR Big tits, Action Combat, Lots of Cosmetics = Successful MMO.

here’s the thing: even if a character isn’t beautiful they still have to be visually appealing and easy on the eyes. (take Quasimodo from Disney’s Hunchback of Notredame, he’s ugly, but he still nice to look at). the characters in this game are not that. They are clearly supposed to be atractive (the female main character was modeled after a fairly attractive real woman), but they’re designed and modelled in such an uncanny way that they’re very unpleasant to look at. nobody wanna spen 10+ Hours staring at uglyness.

LOL I don’t know where you get your information, but the SWTOR has been far from profitable. It is consider one of the industries greatest flops of all time. After they spent GTA levels of money on a game that looks worse than the original Kotor games and had to drop their paid model within a year as a result of the low turnout.

Bioware is done. Few like them, many don’t, and the brand no longer holds significance. Marketing 101 demands terminate what doesn’t work and rebrand. Main studio is gone, the side studio may be beefed up for their new IP, but if that doesn’t go anywhere they’re going to be shuttered as well.

  125. TophatKiyaki

Yeah, no. I don’t know where you’re getting YOUR information, but SWTOR hasn’t been in the red since it initially released. It went into the black years ago. The estimated annual earnings of SWTOR are somewhere around $80,000,000

Maybe you aren’t aware, but SWTOR went F2P back in 2012. It has enjoyed profits ever since, and while it never became a venerable Titan like WoW, it still is the second most prominent Western-built MMO on the market. That’s objective fact, regardless of your personal opinion on the game.

“Where I’m getting my information” is Superdata, a company which has analyzed the earnings and profitability of the video games industry for years, and one of the only ones who put any research into the MMO Market anymore since they do business with all of the major gaming conglomerates.

Profitability has no bearing on the quality of the product, but anyone who still thinks that SWTOR is a financial failure is living six years in the past at this point. EA would have stuttered the game by now if it wasn’t making money (like they have every single other MMO they haven’t sold off to someone else), and it wouldn’t still be receiving major content updates and expansions.

Which show ZERO proof, so a legitimate source. Further Super Data is not a highly regarded source and is held on par with VGCharts for accuracy. It took me a whole lot of 5 minutes to find that out.

By 2014 most analysts were breaking down why SWOTR was a massive failure, while EA marketing were pushing the we can break even narrative that never emerged. There is no report or message from EA at any time with them saying they broke even. I dug and I dug hard to find it as I was sure at some point in that games lifespan it had to have broken even after all these years. I’m sure after years it probably did return its investment, but financially and commercially it is considered by the industry as a failure. You can sugar coat it, site unreliable sources if you’d like, but that doesn’t change the fact the game failed.

Your whole entire argument rests on the game only costing 200 million dollars. EA brilliantly threw an upwards of 300 million in advertisement as some speculated that was the entire cost of the games development, leaving the grand total at $500 million.

The only thing you are correct on is Profitability having no bearing on quality of a product. SWOTR didn’t have quality despite the amount of money they threw at it which is outrageous considering how much was spent on GTAV and how well that game looks and how much money it makes (it keeps Take 2 afloat).

I’m failing to see where in any of what you posted, anything I said was falsified. In fact, if you “read beyond the title” next time, you might find that your linked articles support what I said.

First of all, I did not state that “SWTOR is a Top Grosser”, I said SWTOR is the second highest grossing western-based MMO in the world right now, which is true. Granted, I admit I might have used the terminology a bit incorrectly, as I was referring specifically to MMORPGs, hense the comparison uniquely to games such as Lineage, TERA and WoW.

Superdata, along with most financial compilers these days lump MMOs into the same catagories as lobby games and MOBAs. If you focus on traditional MMOs, the list becomes World of Warcraft, Dungeon Fighter Online (Debatable. Has enough MMO-aspects to it to be considered one, but lacks a true open world) Fantasy Westward Journey Online II, Lineage 1, SWTOR, and TERA. Of all of those games, only two of them are western-based: WoW, and SWTOR.

Yes, I agree that Superdata’s accuracy can be called into question, but unfortunately it is one of the only sources left that consistently reports on MMO profits and industry health. The list of companies that track the MMO Industry has always been small, and Superdata has proven in the past to represent the reality of the genre better than anyone else up to this point.

My source for the profit was actually this http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-07-18-the-old-republic-earned-usd165-million-last-year-report which, once again, stems from Superdata’s reporting. While it can be assumed (and would be expected) for their ongoing profits to decline sharply between 2013 and 2016, that doesn’t change the fact that the game remains near the top of the list in which it is relevant.

The ballpark $80 is based on the game’s position in the list compiled with what we can gather of the profits of the games near it, but in actuality, that was selling it too short. The game directly above it, Lineage 1, saw a profit of about $110 million or so (converted from KRW) according to NCSoft’s Q4 2016 report. On top of that, Superdata’s research ends during Q4 of 2016, in September. SWTOR released it’s sixth paid expansion on December 6th of 2016, meaning odds are profits saw a massive spike for that month uniquely, and possibly slightly less so for these months that have followed.

Now, you’re right in regards to not having access to absolute costs. It’s entirely possible the game cost $500 million, or it could have cost as little as $300 million (though I agree that is unlikely.) However, that doesn’t change the fact that all signs post to the game having long, LONG since become profitable. In February of 2011, EA made the statement that SWTOR would be profitable (Albeit not spectacularly noteworthy) to them with a subscriber base of 500,000 players, and also that “Anything north of a million subscribers it’s a very profitable business.”

In EA’s Q4 2011 report, SWTOR was reported to have achieved 1.3 million subscribers, though that number petered down substantially between Q1 and Q2, but that still stands that at least 1.3 million people were paying at least $14.99 for a subscription for one month. Not counting people who subscribe for 3-month trials and the such and would inflate that number somewhat while diminishing the ones that follow, the bare minimum that SWTOR made from subscriptions in it’s first month was a bare minimum of $19,500,000. Then you factor in the actual cost of the game.

$60 was the bare minimum buy-in, so without assuming any percentage of $80 or $150 dollar purchases (Digital Deluxe and Collector’s Edition respectively), SWTOR made a bare minimum of $97,500,00 which is admittedly unrealistic, and the actual profit probably goes above $100,000,000, meaning that assuming the ballpark estimate of $200,000,000 for development costs is accurate (before factoring in advertising and the sort) SWTOR had already recouped half or close to half of it’s initial development cost within the first month.

The problem is that, beyond that, the game saw a sharp decline in subscriptions. It lost 400,000 subscribers in March, dropping it down to an estimated 900,000. Still more than what it needed to be profitable, but because of how skewed the numbers would be beyond that point, it’s difficult to get an estimate to just how much money it made overall in Q2-Q3 of 2012, and at end of Q4, the F2P conversion hit and it saw another massive temporary spike in revenue as a result.

Still, if we’re going into the realm of speculation, which is all we have if we aren’t going to utilize the few resources we have available, it’s extremely unlikely SWTOR ended 2012 without recouping the entirety of it’s raw development costs. It had likely already recouped them, if not come extremely close, before the F2P conversion even occurred. That leaves it anywhere from $100 to $300 million in the when you factor in the potential additional costs.

However, from a strictly development standpoint, SWTOR became profitable, and from a common sense standpoint, EA clearly thinks that it is profitable, because it still supports it continuously with meaty content updates and shows no sign of stopping. We can speculate until the cows come home about “How much SWTOR /really/ cost”, but the reality is that if EA is willing to continue to dump money into a game built on a wretched botched and broken variant of an engine that was only sub-functional from day one that has been running for going on six years, odds are there’s something we’re missing that only EA can see, because if SWTOR was somehow still a deep money sink, they’d be utterly foolish to continue to dump MORE money into it.

I’m not even trying to defend the damn game, I think it sucks. It’s just intellectually dishonest to say that all these years later the game is still a financial failure, when all of the data we ACTUALLY have access to that doesn’t involve raw speculation suggests the exact opposite.

America demonizes sex? Really? The country where “sex sells” is more than just some bullshit slogan and is a reality in pretty much every movie with a PG13 rating?

I’m one of the few Americans who thinks putting sex in a video game is a waste of time. Especially when you consider the fact that you have to take the time to actually put it all in the game. If I want to watch someone fuck I could go fuck some chick myself, or watch porn.

There’s a time and a place for everything, putting sex in a video game is just utterly pointless. It has nothing to do with “demonizing sex”.
