Sora Ltd. president and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai revealed he’s been working on a new game for a few years, and it will get revealed soon.

Sakurai revealed the new game in development during his Finale Special from his “Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games” YouTube Channel, which aired this morning.

In the big finale video, Sakurai revealed that around 2021 when he was working on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC characters, he was told to work on a new game proposal.

“I received a request to write a game proposal, which I finished at lightning speed,” Sakurai said. “I’m sorry I can’t share more about this project, but assuming we’re able to get it made, it should be announced sooner or later.”

After this Sakurai wrapped up the last downloadable content fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, so his commitment to directing that game was complete. He was then prompted to move forward with production on that new game.

“In late October of 2021, Sora was released, and my work commitments were more or less wrapped up,” Sakurai said. “There was, of course, that new game proposal I had written. I’d been given the OK to move forward with production, but it was going to take some time to assemble the right team. The target timeframe was April 2022. Until then, I would have to wait.”

In the majority of the video Sakurai detailed his exhausting work schedule on regular game development, after which he gets time for regular daily activities, and squeezed in more time for his YouTube channel. The new project had to ramp up development alongside his channel.

“The game project I’ve mentioned had already started production, so as I’d prepared for, I had to work on both ventures at once.”

It’s been over two years since Sakurai began work on this new and unannounced game – so we’ll likely hear more about it soon just as he teased earlier. We’ll keep you guys posted.
