Marvel’s Wolverine won’t include the X-Men

Marvel's Wolverine

Insomniac Games has revealed a surprising detail about Marvel’s Wolverine where the X-Men don’t exist in this version of the universe.

The confirmation comes directly from creative director Marcus Smith, who explained that the studio is taking its own approach to Marvel’s mutant mythology.

“It’s our own unique take on the world, and as such, we are putting it in modern times, but the X-Men do not exist,” Smith said. “The X-Men are not in our game, and where we do start is Logan has been around for a while. He’s been part of a team called Team X.”

Instead of joining Professor Xavier’s famous group, players will see Logan connected to Team X, a black-ops mutant organization inspired by Marvel comics. The group is tasked with protecting vulnerable mutants around the world and includes familiar faces such as Sabretooth.

The reveal has sparked plenty of discussion online. Some fans appreciate Insomniac trying something different, while others are disappointed that Wolverine’s first major standalone game won’t feature the iconic X-Men team.

Despite that, the game still includes several well-known mutants. Characters like Jean Grey and Mystique are confirmed to appear, while the story focuses heavily on Logan’s personal struggles, brutal combat style, and complicated past.

With Insomniac describing it as the beginning of a larger mutant-focused story, many fans are already wondering whether the X-Men could eventually appear in future entries.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
