Mario 64 Gets Co-Op Play Via Mod

Even though I have been playing Mario games since the NES, it’s Mario 64 that remains my favorite of the long-running series. Though many of the older games have a two player mode that me and my friends often took advantage of, Mario 64 does not. Well, sort of. Remarkably, someone managed to place a co-op mode within the Mario 64 rom and has had an impressive amount of success with getting it to play well.

The mod is brought to us by youtube user Skelux Core, and (naturally) requires emulation to make it work. Even still, it seems very well done and works well so long as the camera is panned out far enough to see both characters.

In the mod, Luigi joins Mario as the second player and has limited control over the camera as well as having to share the first player’s health. It sounds like it would make the game a bit harder (and the video seems to prove that), but it’s still fun to see what the game would have looked like if Luigi was put into the game as a second player option.

If you want to try it for yourself, instructions can be found below this video.
