Lord of the Rings Special Effects Studio Working on Game Based on “Major Worldwide IP”

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Wētā Workshop, the special effects studio behind The Lord of the Rings are working on a new game based on a “major worldwide IP.”

A job listing via BambooHR shows Wētā Workshop are asking for a Producer to help “develop cutting edge games across a variety of platforms within the Interactive division.” The Wellington, New Zealand based role aims to deliver the studio’s next project for PC and console with “a major worldwide IP that is very close to our hearts.”

Along with The Lord of the Rings films, Wētā Workshop have also produced special effects for Alita: Battle Angel, Thor: Ragnarok, Blade Runner 2049, Mad Max: Fury Road, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Avatar, and more. The Lord of the Rings will notably have a live-action TV series, and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is currently set to launch Fall 2022.

If there is to be a major push for The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit franchise, another video game would not seem out of place. It is also hard to imagine what other franchises Wētā Workshop would consider “very close to their hearts.”

As Gollum will be focused on stealth and making choices, what would another game in the franchise offer? What do you think? Tell us in the comments below!
