Love it or hate it, Walmart is the titan of the retail industry, both in the Americas and all over the world. The retail outlet has put many of its competitors out of business, and now it seems like they’ve set their sights on yet another potential profitable avenue – used games trade ins.
Beginning next week, Walmart is going to start accepting trade-ins of used video games for store credit, credit that can be used towards anything that they offer in store. The program was announced today, and it will officially begin on March 26th.
Walmart’s chief merchandising and marketing officer, Duncan Mac Naughton, said that the company is “actively taking aim at the $2 billion dollar pre-owned video game opportunity, a market that Gamestop has been dominating within the United States for years now.
Once the program is launched, Walmart will accept trade-ins for used games in over 3,100 over their stores within the United States, although trade-ins will not be accepted at Sam’s Club or local market locations, or areas where it is prohibited by law. However, once you’ve received store credit, you can use it at any Wal-mart or via their online store.
In case you were wondering if this means Walmart will follow Gamestop’s deep profit margins with thumping pre-owned games before brand new copies, that will probably come to pass as this summer they will also begin selling used games, both in store and online. They also launched a new ad to spread word of the new program:

Walmart has experimented in the used game market before, but it was a small pilot program that only saw kiosks being launched in specific stores back in 2009, only to eventually be discontinued.
