We’ve learned (via China Film Insider) that a real-life movie is being produced based on the long-running Konami shooter, Contra.

The new movie is one of three scripts picked up by Beijing Starlit Movie and TV Culture, which got approved by China’s Big Brother-like cultural bureau this month.

Details are scant, however we know the plot is supposed to be similar to the game franchise and will naturally have the same name. However, as the movie is being produced in China, it will take place on an island in the South China Sea and will have additional Chinese characters.

“In 1988, a huge meteorite lands on an uninhabited island in the South China Sea,” the official description published by China’s media watchdog reads.

“Chen Qiang and Li Zhiyong investigate but come up empty handed. 29 years later, Chen sends commandos Bill and Lance into a combat mission there to neutralize the villainous Red Falcon Organization, but end up facing a different enemy altogether.”

A premiere wasn’t announced, mostly because the production for the movie sounds like it hasn’t even begun yet. Rest assured, there will be lots of gunfire and hopefully no lack of violence, as the movie will presumably be made under China’s strict cultural policies.
