Years in the making – Netflix’s long-awaited live-action City Hunter movie is finally here, and it’s now available to stream exclusively on their platform.

Directed by Yūichi Satō (Kisaragi, Strawberry Nights, and The End of the Tiny World), City Hunter is now available for streaming exclusively on Netflix. The film is based on the wildly popular manga of the same name from the 1980s.

Announced back in 2022, the new live-action City Hunter movie stars Ryohei Suzuki as the sweeper himself Ryo Saeba (Tokyo MER, Segodon) alongside Misato Morita (Missing, The Naked Director) as Kaori Makimura.

As mentioned the film is based on the original City Hunter manga, penned by artist Tsukasa Hojo, which sold over 50 million copies worldwide. The popularity of City Hunter quickly spawned an also-popular anime series and several feature films – including some made in Hong Kong (one starring Jackie Chan, too). This is the first time the series will get a live-action adaptation based in its native country of Japan.

The most recent animated film, City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust, was produced by Aniplex and animated by Sunrise, and was released back in September of last year as a celebration of the series 35th anniversary.

Here’s the official blurb on the movie, plus a new trailer:

City Hunter, the hugely popular comic that has sold over 50 million copies and created a sensation, finally gets a live-action adaptation made in Japan! This notorious, cool-headed yet excitable protagonist descends upon modern-day Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” based in Shinjuku, Tokyo who cleans up trouble in the gritty underworld. Although he’s an unparalleled playboy who struggles to keep his cool around beautiful women, when he accepts a request, he carries it out with crack marksmanship, impressive athletic abilities and a calm composure. The unflappable, foolish and flirtatious Ryo is played by Ryohei Suzuki, while the heroine Kaori Makimura is played by Misato Morita. Ryo’s partner Hideyuki Makimura is played by Masanobu Ando, and Saeko Nogami, a beautiful detective who has a complicated relationship with Ryo, is played by Fumino Kimura.

Join Ryo, Kaori and Hideyuki on the bustling streets of modern-day Shinjuku as the curtain finally rises on the origin story of City Hunter.
