Life Is Strange Gameplay

Life is Strange, the point-and-click adventure game in development by Dontnod Entertainment and being published by Square Enix, now has a video showcasing its gameplay.

Above, you can watch an almost five minutes of Max, the protagonist, walking around, looking at things, commenting on them, and rewinding time.

That’s right: Max is a girl who can rewind time. She discovers her ability when she returns to her hometown, and uses it to save her childhood friend, Chloe. Soon, the pair are trying to uncover what happened to a friend of Chloe’s who’s gone missing. Think Veronica Mars meets Tru Calling but a little younger.

Max can rewind time at will, so players will be able to undo any action they take in the game; the only limitation is that time can’t be rewound past checkpoints. Players’ choices will affect the story, sometimes immediately, and sometimes way down the line … which means that the game will, of course, be delving into the concept of unintended consequences.

Strange‘s story takes place in the state of Oregon, which the developers said they chose because of its autumnal atmosphere. The pseudo-sepia color palette is fitting; it reminds me of photographers’ “magic hour”, that time of day when the light makes everything look good.

Life is Strange will get a series of digital-only releases throughout 2015, with five interdependent episodes being published just weeks apart from each other, on the PC, PlayStation 3 and 4, and Xbox 360 and One.
