Level-5 Acquires Comcept, Rebranded to Level-5 Comcept

This week’s Famitsu (via Hachima) reports Keiji Inafune’s company, Comcept, has been acquired by Japanese publisher Level-5.

The company will now be a fully owned subsidiary, and will be rebranded to Level-5 Comcept. Roughly 15 staff are currently employed by the company, and Comcept as it currently operates will be closed sometime in the future.

While Inafune’s role in the new subsidiary isn’t clear, the goal is to produce games similar to what Inafune has been known for. Inafune did note that he will take responsibility for games he’s been working on until they’re completed.

The debut game from Level-5 Comcept is a mobile game called Dragon Colonies, which is set for a launch sometime next year in Japan. Players will be able to adventure through a world filled with a multitude of races, including: humans, beasts, and magical creatures.

How do you guys feel about Level-5 acquiring Comcept? Sound off in the comments below!

Hopefully they’ll fire Inafune, and then turn MN9 into the multimedia franchise he intended it to be without him.

Level 5 are talented at making games, so hopefully they make some good MegaMan type games. The only problem is inheriting the reputation of Mighty No.9

Level-5, what the fuck; just because you got a load of money in recent times doesn’t mean you should blow it all willy nilly! This is a company who blew through way more time and money than what they needed before putting out a mediocre piece of shit that gained a huge amount of hate towards it during its development.

He’d just spin it into “if it wasn’t for me, it would never have been a thing and the Megaman type of gameplay you know and love would’ve stayed dead”. Better to cut its head off in infancy and have him forever know how shit his attempt was and that no one would support another attempt out of him again than to allow him any pleasure in knowing his baby eventually became a success.

Depression isn’t a reason to do stupid things. They even had all that shit that happened during development and people giving out ways to get your money back when they closed the doors on refunds. 20 or 30 bucks is a pat on the back “learn from your mistake” but with 150 you need to have your nose forced down into the mistake you made.

I’m… indifferent? At least until they announce what they plan on actually doing with it. I don’t really see this as a good or bad thing. Given the disaster that Might Number 9 was and the lack of anything else of note to come out of Comcept, all I see that Level-5 has acquired is a pre-assembled collection of programmers and hardware. Those same were responsible for a game that bombed, but maybe they were just badly mismanaged. Or maybe they actually suck.

They have to make something under Level-5 before we’ll be able to tell what effect this change has had.

EDIT: Seeing other people mention them, I do wonder if this means that Level-5 now has full or partial responsibility for fulfilling MM9 backer rewards.

You’re too negative to even comprehend the benefits this will bring.

    -Bigger budgets
    -Better management
-Less scatterbrained projects and more focus
    -More careful planning
-And just letting Inafune and his team make games, which he is far better at doing than running a company all on his own.

But if you’re going to just be insatiably flippant no matter what, then be my guest

Everyone here is being so toxic it’s kind of embarrassing.

Are you really too blind to see the benefits of a well established company now obtaining the full rights to another struggling company?

Comcept has made some mistakes. I am not ignoring that. But you dont think MAYBE having someone with a little better backing and standing in the industry could fix them up and produce some really fucking good games?

I dont think you realize who Level-5 is. They are huge in Japan.

You dont think with Level-5 behind them, they could correct their mistakes? You dont think they wont have a better budget? You dont think they will have better focus and guidance on their projects? Comcept screwed up because they bit off more than they could chew. Tried to do too many things at once and ended up disappointing the majority of their fans because they couldnt focus their efforts on any single thing.

Comcept isnt INHERENTLY BAD like you’re pretending they are. They had one major release, and they stumbled out of the gates and the company you were all rooting for to be the heroes of your favorite franchise suddenly became your worst enemy, and the entire community spat venom back in their faces.

This is their second chance. I’m personally asking you to turn off your memes, and hate, and “its trendy and edgy to insult game companies” logic for like 2 minutes and go back to when you first heard about Mighty Number 9 and think about the insane hype you felt for it.

If Level-5 can recapture just a fraction of that hype, and deliver, I think you’ll all be changing your tune.

“That makes no sense.” – I can break it down point by point for you.

-Bigger budgets – not necessarily, it depends what kind of games they’ll develop. Considering that the first game is a mobile one, that’s not the case.
-Better management – how can you possibly know that – it all depends on the manager.
-Less scatterbrained projects and more focus – this depends on the team members and it won’t be changed by the acquisition
-More careful planning – see above
-And just letting Inafune and his team make games, which he is far better at doing than running a company all on his own.- judging by MN9 their quality of games isn’t exactly great.

“You really think a company would buy another company and they would be
like “Welp, the only reason we were able to acquire you is due to a
series of poor decision making on your part, leaving you in a financial
sore spot. Lets let you keep doing more of the same!”” – no, I don’t think that. Any other strawman positions you want to throw out there?

Companies buy each other wholesale all the time just for the sake of owning their repertoire of IP’s and talent. Maybe Level-5 sees future potential in Beck, maybe they just wanted a cheap subsidiary to use as a mobile game developer.

He is right though, there’s no guarantee that Level-5 would concede any benefits to Comcept, and in fact they have no reason or motivation to after the MN9 fiasco. I doubt Inafune would continue working at Comcept for long too, he’s always been fascinated with the western market and I doubt he’ll stand being put to work on mobile games for the Japanese market for too long.

Sony with Capcom when it comes to paying for Street Fighter V
    Bethesda with Fallout
    Konami with Hudson

And so far there hasn’t been any word on Inafune being let go which would make this deal be seen in a far brighter light.

That begs the question though: who cares?

I mean, at this point who would want another game from Comcept/Inafune?? With their 2 recent games being “mediocre” at best and the poor handling of their Mighty No. 9 and Red Ash crowdfunding projects, there isn’t exactly any faith or trust behind them. Yeah having Level-5 run the show could improve things, but that’s not a guarantee either.

I will say this though, as long as they don’t “resolve” the missing physical rewards and portable versions of MN9, I would never even consider buying a game from them ever again.

The reason people are still pissed off at Comcept (and Inafune) is BECAUSE they were so hyped up for MN9 and then Comcept bungled it so badly the hype died before the game was even released.

The burden isn’t on gamers to be generous and gentle and forgive the mess that MN9 ended up on blind faith that Comcept will do better this time because someone is there to make them do better. The burden is on Comcept to earn back people’s trust and good faith by producing actually good games in the future. If they can do that then yeah, people will change their tune because there will be actual solid proof instead of ‘g-give them a chance, even if they took your money and wasted it all’.

You’re not convincing anyone by aggressively stanning for Comcept all over the comments, so give it a rest.

I agree that the missing backer rewards are a huge issue. Level-5 should really help Comcept resolve that situation as quickly as possible to start washing away that stigma, or I wouldn’t recommend anybody support that company either.

But as far as games are concerned, I dunno. Judge a game by how good it is and how fun it is to you. A game should be able to fall or stand on its own merits irrelevant of the brand or the name of the director attached to it.

I understand the sentiment behind that thought. People crap on EA all the time, but I’m sure a lot of them still buy a game or 2 from them. Heck, I still bought Metal Gear Solid V even when I loathed the idea of supporting Konami. But as you said, in the end it’s usually the game itself that people really care about. And if the game if the game is that good, people are willing to bend their morals to get their hands on it.

In all honestly though, at this very moment I highly doubt that any game from Comcept would make me even consider changing my stance with them. Unless the game is so good that it’s considered an instant classic and the birth of a new franchise, I’m wouldn’t lose any sleep over not playing their games ever again.
