We’ve learned some tragic news – Ian Fraser ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister of the British hard rock group Motörhead, has died at the age of 70.

According to TMZ, Lemmy died while playing “his favorite video game,” at home, around 4 PM yesterday, December 28th.

The very sad bit of information is that Lemmy was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of cancer just two days prior. A part of rock lifestyle, he was known to drink and smoke cigarettes quite a bit – he smoked for a whopping 57 years.

Here’s the full statement regarding Lemmy’s passing, from the band:

There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family.

We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words.

We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD.

Born to lose, lived to win.

As part of a move to remember Lemmy and his life as the frontman of Motörhead, hacking group Cobe (thanks, IndieRetroNews) has converted the original Amiga game of the same name, Motörhead, to PC and is offering it as a free download.

The game was originally developed by Kaitsu Software and published by Virgin Interactive, and is a bit of a beat ’em up classic in the vein of what you’d expect to carry the name of one of the most iconic and influential British rock bands of all time.
