Learn How the Harvest Moon Series was Inspired by Zelda and Sim City

The latest in the Did You Know Gaming Youtube series is all about Harvest Moon. I’m a long time fan of the series, so I’ve already known about most of this stuff, but it’s really cool to see it be all compiled into one video for newcomers, or more casual fans.

The series started with creator Yasuhiro Wada moving to Tokyo and soon finding himself reminiscing about his countryside life as a child. As he played other games at the time, he adapted core mechanics from them into what would become the original Harvest Moon for the Super Famicom.

The way users would craft tools was inspired from The Legend of Zelda, raising livestock came from Derby Stallion, and the way your farm could expand and be upgraded came from none other than Sim City.

Out of all the information compiled here, by far the most interesting to me is the bit about Harvest Moon 64 being the closest to Wada’s original vision.

What do you guys think? Does this mean Harvest Moon 64 is the best in the series?
