LDP of Japan blasts online posts with reminder on anti-misinformation act

Japan

The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan put out a reminder that they will “take appropriate measures” against social media accounts that post misleading or defamatory things online.

The political party noted they will take actions, including up to, “legal actions such as disclosure requests based on facts, as necessary” if users post “false or misleading information or engage in malicious defamation on social media platforms.”

It’s worth noting the “Provider Liability Limitation Act” has been around since 2001, so this is nothing new, though the act was most recently revised back in 2022 to make it smoother for victims of infringement of rights or slander, online, to get help.

It remains unclear how far the Japanese government, specifically its leading LDP portion, will take measures against netizens both in Japan and globally.

Other countries, like the United Kingdom, have gone so far as to use AI to scan for what they deem as “hate speech.” After which, they’ve been sending local police to confront and sometimes arrest individuals for things posted online.

Japan’s other popular political party, the far-right party Sanseito, wants to censor things like anime and manga, but for an entirely different reason: to shift themes from being successful products to intentionally push curated (conservative or traditional) social values.
