Kyoto Animation memorial erected marking 5 years after fatal arson attack

A new memorial for the 2019 Kyoto Animation fire was erected this month in Uji, Kyoto, roughly five years since the tragic attack that claimed 36 lives and injured 32.

The memorial is not actually on the former Kyoto Animation site which has been since demolished, but on the Tea and Uji History Park, near the Uji Rail Station.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Kyoto Animation staff and relatives of the deceased (via Kyodo News). The monument was dedicated and designed with the help of Kyoto Animation artists.

In the three meter statue were 36 doves, each representing the deceased in the arson, and has an inscription which reads: “Passing dreams and passion from person to person.”

Here’s a video of the dedication ceremony:

Future visitors are refrained from sending flowers to the monument to prevent disruptions in public life in the park, though it will be open to the public.

The 2019 Kyoto Animation arson was perpetuated by a disgruntled fan who claimed his work was plagiarized by Kyoto Animation in an anime script contest in July 18, 2019. The accused was found guilty of murder in court and was sentenced to death.
