The man who committed the deadly arson attack on Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) in 2019 has been sentenced to death in Japan.
The attack left 36 dead and injured many others, arsonist Shinji Aoba was also injured in his own attack and had to go through physical therapy before he could stand trial.
Aoba allegedly sought revenge on Kyoto Animation. A rejected novelist, Aoba falsely believed that Kyoto Animation had stolen his writing and ideas to use in their own shows.
During his trial, Aoba apologized to the victims and claimed that if he had received the kind of support he’d received in the Osaka detention center where he was held, he may not have committed the attack.
The defense claimed that Aoba was not mentally competent to be held criminally liable, a defense which the judge appeared to disagree with given the ultimate sentence of death.
Kyoto Animation is a Japanese anime studio known for their work on titles like Sound! Euphonium, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, and more.
