Konami Squashes Rumor, Says They’re Still Producing AAA Games

metal gear solid v the phantom pain 09-22-15-1

It seems like the latest rumor surrounding Konami abandoning their AAA game development isn’t true, according to a new statement from the publisher.

A representative from Konami has gone on the record to say the publisher is not AAA game development for home consoles, according to a response over on Reddit.

The user opened a support ticket, asking what is happening with the future of Metal Gear Solid and the Fox Engine. To his surprise (and ours) the company responded with the following statement:

“I can promise you that we’re definitely not leaving Metal Gear behind or anything like that. I know some blogs were claiming that online this morning, but I’m not really sure where they’d be getting that from.

We’re still definitely working on console games and franchises such as Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania, PES and all the rest.”

It’s worth mentioning that Konami was previously hiring new staff for an entirely new Metal Gear project, although it remains to be seen what this could be.

Well this is confusing. I’m just gonna wait from some kind of official statement from Konami themselves as to what they plan to do in the future.

Hopefully this is the official word.

Also you’re missing a word in the second paragraph:
“has gone on the record to say the publisher is not (I’m assuming ‘abandoning’ goes here) AAA game development for home consoles”

I think I’ll wait until something is announced until I believe it. Where’s my fucking Enders’ Project, Konami?

    September 22, 2015 at 11:31 am

Who of talent is left there to make AAA though? Overseas outsourcing does not net AAA either, only triple (S)hit games.

Is Konami deliberately acting retarded, are all the staff given distinct information for shit and giggles?

I feel like this article’s title should be more like “Konami Squashes AAA Game, Says They’re Still Producing Rumors.”

Anyone with a lick of common sense could’ve figured as much; of course they wouldn’t leave that MGS money on the table when they’ve just been handed the perfect formula to milk.

Although all I really want is a proper sequel to Rising, and maybe an improved Lords of Shadow 3 by Platinum.

Seems the guy that is replying to emails hasn’t got the memo they aren’t making AAA games anymore.

What’s worse than Konami not doing more AAA games?

Konami actually doing more AAA games after all that’s happened.

Silent Hill…? They said they are still working on Silent Hill…?

    Yep, the user got trolled.

    Also, shouldn’t this sentence:

“A representative from Konami has gone on the record to say the publisher is not AAA game development for home consoles”

be like this: “…is not stopping AAA game development…”?

I do think they can redeem themselves, just make good games. I just don’t think they are really interested in that at the moment.

…and yet they have nothing announced at all. Not a single game on the consoles upcoming.

How? They have no more talent working for them.

  27. Misogynerd
    September 23, 2015 at 10:20 am

Well then they gotta get new talent or make do with the people they have.

  28. GonzoLewd
    September 23, 2015 at 9:16 pm

That’s the problem, they don’t give a shit about acquiring. They’re just going to make do with the people to make more Soccer games or mobile games.

The only way I can see them improving is if they see their stocks plummet and the CEO steps down and they add another CEO who actually cares about their fanbase. Sort of like Square Enix’s position back in 2012.

    September 23, 2015 at 10:27 pm

Yeah, hopefully that happens. I would say to give the IPs to another company, but I don’t think that usually works. At worst they’ll outsource the game to cheap american game studio #45 and just continue making mockeries of loved IPs.

They already did that with Castlevania when they kicked off Igarashi and asked Mercury Steam, the guys who made Jericho which was utter garbage, to make Lords of Shadows and a sequel. They’ll probably ask them to make a Contra reboot.
