Konami Officially Looking Into New Metal Gear Solid Game, “Large-Scale Investment” Needed

metal gear solid v the phantom pain 11-03-15-1

Hot on the heels of our previous report stating Konami has shut down their Los Angeles-based Metal Gear Online studio, the publisher is yet again cited as looking into a new Metal Gear Solid title, and it’s probably going to cost a whole lot more than what Metal Gear Solid V cost to develop.

In today’s Nikkei (from 2ch, via Kotaku), the publisher has officially begun internal talks regarding the next Metal Gear Solid title. The newspaper said that Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima (who Konami still claims is on vacation) has not confirmed if he’s working on the next game.

“When we start development, a large-scale investment will become necessary,” says Konami in a quote via Nikkei. The report also states a release date and further details for the game are not confirmed.

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima is reportedly no longer with Konami while Kojima Productions have been shuttered. Despite this, Konami is still sticking to their comment regarding the entire thing: Kojima and his team are on “vacation.”

Yes I agree the whole MGS saga is told a full circle ended with MGS5.

MGS4 ended the solid snake he suppose to be long gone now with fox-die.

I don’t think you can do any more unless they do the younger years saga.

But that like flogging a dead horse.

Didn’t Kojima say he messed up the Canon with TPP? I thought he wrote out that Big Boss would be the lead character in Guns of the Patriots & Solid Snake dies

Though I’ve not played TPP yet (Don’t wanna give Konami my money) so I can’t judge for myself if he messed the Canon up

It’s amazing how this company manages to make me so angry that I do like a 720. I went from anger to just getting fed up to not even caring anymore back in to full on anger because it just doesn’t fucking stop.

I just want this company to die a fast and quick death so they can go away now.

I don’t know what kojamia said I must have missed that interview.

Big boss star in MGS4 but not to be lead character as he too die at the end.

To be fair, MGSV was a travesty in all but visuals so I’m sure they can do better. Unless Kojima has gotten himself dug out of his own ass and smacked back into the reality of good game design and narrative writing then I’d prefer fan writers over him and his crew any day.

That said, I do agree with you in principal. It’s pretty dumb.

  27. Godmars
    November 3, 2015 at 2:54 pm

Would think, aside from firing an now needing to hire new devs, that MGS5 had made profit enough to represent “substantial investment”. If not then someone needs to explain the point of a company making games. Having a largely successful one.

  28. Sakurai
    November 3, 2015 at 3:04 pm

Man I doubt MGSV even resembles what Kojima wanted it to originally be. We know for certain that he’s been forced to make a lot of design changes that he didn’t want to make going back to even before Ground Zeroes was released, who knows how long he had been feuding with Konami until it was decided that MGSV’s development would stop and Kojima would just have to pick a place to finish things up. Even then, they still wouldn’t let him finish up with Eli.

We are talking about a game that had a $80 mill budget and a 5 year development time, yeah pity Kojima for the ungodly constraints on his creativity. It’s a wonder he got anything done.

Konami are a really weird bunch. They’ve already expressed that they want to get out of gaming and move to the cheaper to produce, higher profit generating pachinko market. They frankly have no reason to cater to or appease the market they want out of. Selling their IP’s would make it over and done with and they’ll be out of the crosshairs of their former fans.

That’s a pretty normal budget for a AAA game, let alone an open-world one.

Its not that he couldn’t get things done, its about not being able to take the time he wanted, and having the upper brass playing backseat developer.

There’s one last chapter that probably would have made it in if Kojima had his way.

  56. TsukuyomiMagi99
    November 4, 2015 at 9:21 am

Like others here I’d like a remake of the original Metal Gear but also of Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. Also a Metal Gear telling the story of The Boss during World War 2 and the formation the cobra unit would be cool. Another Metal Gear Rising but starring Grey Fox and exploring his backstory would be awesome too. So there’s plenty of creative outlets Metal Gear can go.

  58. 2501

Again, 5+ year development time, even Rockstar manage to get their games done in that time.

Lets look at the facts – He rejected an entire soundtrack, GZ was released for the purpose of further funding PP’s budget and he hired an A-list actor for the lead (which honestly… wasn’t really worth it.)

Look l get it, Kojima is a perfectionist but it’s clear to me that he was too ambitious with the project that he couldn’t contain it. Phantom Pain is a game full of great ideas but they sadly go nowhere.

I think there’s a lot of narrative potential considering how fleshed out the time before and after the one game that started it all is.
structurally, the way the series can be divided into two parallel trilogies wraps up the franchise nicely:
    1, 2, 4
    3, 5, 6
It would be as much about Big Boss as it would Snake.
plus having hayter play a role and Sutherland the other would be neat-o.
