Koei Tecmo Reveals an Attack on Titan Visual Novel for 3DS

attack on titan 09-16-14-1

This week’s Famitsu (via Hachima) has the first details on yet another Attack on Titan game from Koei Tecmo.

Titled Attack on Titan: Escape from Certain Death, the game is described as a visual novel that is developed by Koei Tecmo’s Ruby Party studio, known for their Neo Romance series. The staff responsible for the TV anime are also collaborating on the title.

The new game is currently in development for the Nintendo 3DS, and is roughly 30% complete.

Set within an original story, players will experience life in an old castle. The protagonist is a completely original character, and a member of the Survey Corps. The player character gets stuck after losing their equipment and finds themself lost in the castle. Your goal is to escape with main characters from the series.

It’s worth mentioning the story takes place before the battle with the Female Titan. You can pick your gender, with Mikasa accompanying the male protagonist and Levi joining the female protagonist. As you progress through the story, you’ll be able to interact with different characters from the series.

In case you missed it, you can find our review for the action-based Attack on Titan game here (we highly recommend it!).

That’s very limited in terms of characters. Plus Hange is best waifu.

Why is this game not for the PlayStation vita? That is some whore shit. The PlayStation Vita is the perfect device for visual novels. It was practically made for the devise. I mean really. A visual novel for the Nintendo 3DS. Is the game even voiced? The graphics, and story art (witch are pretty big thing in a visual novel, besides story of cores) would look so much better on the PlayStation Vita. Game developers need to stop hitting there crack pipes and start thinking.

Apparently there has been a recent surge is smaller companies making VNs for the 3ds. Guess KT decided to capitalize on this.

Seriously calling anything but the PC the perfect device for VNs? (Largely since ratings aren’t a barrier, it has an endless library etc).

The story has no reason to be worse due to being on the 3DS. Fully voiced VNs have happened on the 3DS. The base artwork would be the same though obviously at a lower res.

It is only 30% done and just got announced with no release date. It doesn’t surprise me that Hange wasn’t their first mention.

She’ll probably be in the game though I don’t know how core she will be if they have a Mikasa/Levi thing which not only leans towards Ackerman being a big focus but also simply the two most popular folks in the series.

You’re probably right. The Mikasa/Levi role will likely be guidance of how to open doors etc.

Oh my God what the hell is wrong with me. How could I forget about those awesome hentai visual novels that I always see the openings up on YouTube. Hentai visual novels were one of the big reasons why I even purchased PC in the first place.

I don’t even mean H games in general. A good number of VNs which are notable on consoles even if they don’t go that far need cuts and may even drop as far as CERO B.

What is the kind of stupidity you are looking to avoid?

I can confirm it is stupid in many ways (the core goal from the outset is a meme, titans look silly as heck and such), I still think it is a ride worth joining since the animation, music and general world are well done.

Mate, I don’t know if your post is serious or something, but the only thing the Vita can boast over other devices is portability, and even then, there are other portable devices that can arguably do the job better with way less.

    – A kindle can potentially run most basic VN’s that lack more complex gameplay mechanics. Most are just sprites juxtaposed on top of a flat image background. If one of the arguments is the Vita’s screen size, the Kindle ironically already beats it by far.

    – In case something that actually requires input is needed, PC’s are better as they have support for the largest number of input devices available on the market (not that you’ll be playing a VN with a racing wheel or anything).

    – PC’s also theoretically don’t have a hardware ceiling for visual novels, and yes, they don’t have rating restrictions, so a content creator doesn’t have to be afraid to compromise his story in terms of sex, language or graphic violence.

    – There’s no real reason a 3DS can’t execute a novel just as well as the Vita: 3DS’s nowadays come in screens just as big, and don’t actually require the Vita’s proprietary SD’s, making it a more practical platform for the consumer. The 3DS is also cheaper, which is good since the horsepower isn’t completely wasted like in the Vita, and more consumers can have access to them in the end due to the availability of micro SD’s and the smaller price of the platform.

The Vita is, ironically, a terrible platform for VN’s: it doesn’t do anything any better than its competitor. I guess it sold well in Japan, so Japanese devs bank on that as a VN device, merely by consequence. Arguably, you’re really not meant to play a VN on a portable anyway, where you’ll potentially be in a noisy or shaky place, staring at a small screen trying to read text and get into a story, so the 3DS is equally as bad in that regard.

I can see you own a Vita. I’m glad you can enjoy VN’s on it, and I’m not trying to take away your enjoyment, but please, to call it “the perfect platform for VN’s” is meme-worthy.

Oh that’s the one. You will have plenty of action to bite into in the first season of 26 episodes but as a manga reader, I can warn you about the second one being due to be very politics focused (with some odd stuff too) even if they is great action.

So try out the first season if you want and note that if you just want to see humans and titans dying each chapter/episode, things will considerably slow down after that in general.

this game is made for the “little girls that would eventually grow to be full blown fujoshi” audience, it’s normal for it to be on the 3ds.
in contrast, mature fujoshi titles are on the vita

That’s fair, though you make it sound like you’re getting total ass from a 3DS screen compared to a Vita screen. I admit there’s a large pixel density gap I didn’t take into account but I doubt the difference is even close to a deal breaker.

Yes, the screen is smaller. On a normal 3DS it’s considerably smaller. On an XL model, the 3DS screen is slightly narrower but actually slightly taller as well. If you consider that the screen on the Vita Slim is not an OLED but a slightly cheaper LCD variant, the two are very comparable from that standpoint, and the handhelds now cost the exact same price, while the 3DS peripherals like extra batteries and SD cards are still cheaper.

I suppose you would pick a Vita at that point, because it has most of the titles you’d probably be interested in reading. The stereoscopic 3D adds nothing to the experience, though it *is* interesting to add that, if you turn the 3D off in a 3DS, when both consoles are cranked to full brightness with wi-fi turned off, the 3DS then edges the Vita out in battery life.

    >doubt the difference is even close to a deal breaker
it is. go play conception 2 on each system and see for yourself.

That’s not a deal breaker though. The games are exactly the same across systems. Yes, the visual quality takes a hit on the 3DS, but people seem happy with the product they got on both sides of the isle if user reviews on metacritic are anything to go by.

Yes, the Vita screen is an OLED and the Slim is a nicer LCD, the two are very comparable. You’re still getting something perfectly serviceable on the 3DS. Conception 2 is still more of a dungeon crawler RPG with a VN strapped to the side of it than it is a more traditional VN. If it were something like Danganronpa on both systems, you’d have to nitpick the differences out.

Yes, the screen on the Vita is undoubtedly better in some aspects. I still stand that the screen size on the 3DS XL models is big enough that at that point, you wouldn’t really care if it’s a little bit bigger on the sides or the top.

They are a very close second to me since it has most of the benefits of the PC (and laptops etc) but I don’t have much storage and haven’t come across too many worthwhile VNs on Android.

Perhaps I need to go to DLsite or something.

if you actually had a vita you would know that 3ds screen is absolute ass compared to the vita. everything are washed out.
    >but people seem happy with the product they got
people are also happy with their $2 earphone. when compared to a $100 earphone it’s literally 64kbps mp3 vs loseless flac
