Sometimes I think I should give KH another chance after KH1 really underwhelmed, then I realize that I need to play like 7 games that occur either parallel to each other or intersect in some fashion to even begin to understand what’s going on.

Don’t forget some of those games are Japanese cellphone only, so you will need to literally read walls of text that people have prepared for you. Because, you know, SQUARE!!!

This isn’t true. The *only* game that isn’t available in NA is x[chi] on smartphone, and it’s getting localized soon as Unchained X. So they’re basically all available here, plus x[chi] has a lot of extraneous lore but nothing pivotal when it comes to understanding the main story.

When your title is indistinguishable from parody, your series has issues.

Does Birth By Sleep: A Fragmentory Passage come with the full game or just the new episode? IINM the episode only has 15 minutes of actual gameplay. If that’s the case then this is really just KH:D3 hd + a short movie and a few cutscenes you won’t care about.

    Everyone’s being way too critical.

“Oh nooo KH-big-plot make thinky-brain go ow ow!” It’s not a big deal, and neither are HD remakes. They’re developing KH3, you’ll get it don’t worry.

If you’re not playing KH for the story, which these HD collections help establish, why the heck are you playing KH?

You’ll need to roll for SAN loss if you want to try and decipher Square Enix’s fanfiction. Play for the gameplay and Disney cameos if you’re really interested. Otherwise, there are better choices out there.

Sweet, if I wait long enough after release, I’ll be able to buy the DDD port cheaper than the 3DS version.

People like the Disney and FF aspects of the story. Hell they even like Sora’s story plus Org 13 but the problem is Xenahort and his multiple body, time travelling shenanigans.

Even if people give Square shit, at least they release everything in neat packages, don’t have special Japan-only manga/light novels a la BlazBlue or .Hack and they really put effort in their re-releases.

It’s complicated, no doubt, but it’s not impossible to understand or anything.

Boy, I sure can’t wait for Kingdom Hearts 3.2, 3.5 and 3.7777: Repeating Edition. Or the eventual 4K remaster 20 years from now that has like 100gb+ of Kingdom Hearts to wade through.

Well, at least they’re consistent now. No need to buy any sort of KH spinoff everyone, Square will just package some form of it in Sony’s latest console.

People are allowed to voice their grievances with KH. Despite my appreciation of the series, even I can admit that nothing Siveon has said is off the mark.

The hard part of following the story was that the games spanned a lot of different platforms. And the games everyone thought were spin-offs turned out to be very important. Obviously, the HD collections are a way of fixing that. Although I wish this was for last gen consoles as well just for consistency.

Lots of people played KH2 without playing CoM which explains why certain things are the way they are in KH2. Without it, most people were totally lost on pretty big portions of the story.

And no doubt that will happen with KH3. I pity the folks that go into KH3 without having played BBS or 3D, thinking that they were just spin-offs without too much plot relevance. Which they’re pretty justified in thinking, as most game series are like that.

Also, personally, if KHs gameplay wasn’t good, I wouldn’t bother with it at all. There’s a pretty good reason why a lot of series veterans recommend just not thinking about the story too much and just enjoying the gameplay. Or looking up any of the “KH in a nutshell” articles/videos that explain things much more succinctly than any of Squares writers can.

This is bullshit, the Aqua story is IN the fucking original game IF not the final mix version. It better not be what I’m thinking of, aka the final part of the game where she fights Terranort. Why release that as its own thing? And even if that’s not it what the shit are we gonna do as Aqua? It cant be AFTER that because shes in the darkness zone thing without her fucking keyblade powers.

I don’t really understand how anybody would think that the other games are just “spinoffs without too much plot relevance.” They were never marketed as such, and treated as very important to the story. The only way you would come to that conclusion is if you literally did no research on the game at all and made a 100% assumption, which would be someone’s own fault. They’re not “justified in their thinking” at all.

Also as a “series veteran” myself, I would never recommend “not thinking about the story too much” or looking up plot summaries. KH’s gameplay is okay, but the story and characters are most certainly the main attraction.

Nah, it’s just a use of one of my favorite writing techniques: hyperbole. I mean, there’s a pretty high chance SE will make more of these in the future. Whether 4K remasters become a thing – I’m not entirely sure. Fun guess though.

Besides, it’s not like I seriously talk like that.

How is “nothing that he said off the mark”? Everything he said was exaggeration (or “hyperbole” as he calls it), so I’d say it was pretty much all off the mark lol

Wow, how many more KH games are they going to release before they get to three at this point? 2.85? 2.9? 2.98?

The series went downhill after KH1, so if you didn’t like the first game don’t even bother with the others.

The reasons people, myself included, figured the non-numbered games were spinoffs rather than mainline games are pretty obvious.

First of all, they weren’t numbered. The titles sounded like spin-offs. And secondly, they were all on handhelds, and it’s a fairly uncommon thing for a console series to put its sequels on a handheld. (Uncommon, not unheard of.)

As for the story, this sort of thing is absolutely subjective, more-so than most story types go. Basically, if you like modern Final Fantasy games’ stories, then you’ll probably like this because it’s just as miasmic as those are. I think the plot is, from an objective standpoint, cluttered and unnecessarily convoluted, but some people might like that.
