We write about kickstarter funded games quite frequently here on Niche Gamer, the platform has enabled up and coming indie developers and veterans alike to pitch their ideas to the public and hopefully see them come to life. You would think that a platform that has definitely earned quite a nice sum of money via their cut of each successful campaign would have Fort Knox like security, but alas, it seems like everything is being hacked these days.
Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler announced via a blog on their site that their website has been compromised, and that hackers thankfully did not get access “of any kind” to credit card information. Only two kickstarter accounts were showing unauthorized credit card activity following the breach, but they’re still in an ongoing investigation.
Strickler elaborated:
“Accessed information included usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers and encrypted passwords. Actual passwords were not revealed, however it is possible for a malicious person with enough computing power to guess and crack an encrypted password, particularly a weak or obvious one.”
The CEO added that Kickstarter is working with both the law enforcement agencies who brought the news of customers reporting fraudulent credit card activity, as well as their internal staff to prevent any future breaches. Despite the downplaying of how bad the breach was, this will no doubt make a lot of user think twice before using the platform.
