Kazunori Yamauchi Wants to Make a Non-Racing Game about Life and Death

Kazunori Yamauchi is the name that many racing enthusiasts have known, for quite a long time. If the name doesn’t strike you as familiar, he’s the mastermind and director behind Sony’s long running Gran Turismo series. The long running racing simulator is wildly popular, so we’re not here to talk about that.

We’re here to talk about a very interesting tidbit that Yamauchi-san let out during a Dengeki Playstation interview, one that shows he still yearns to make games outside of the racing genre that he essentially had a part in building.

He said that he bears interest in creating a game that portrays the concepts of life and death, as a human being. Now that’s a pretty wide range of concepts, ideas, and genres he could be envisioning, but it would certainly be exciting to see the graphical and technical prowess of Polyphony Digital be put towards something other than Gran Turismo 6.

Polyphony Digital has created non-Gran Turismo games before, with the mecha shooter Omega Boost (for the original Playstation) and Tourist Trophy (for the Playstation 2), although the latter game was still a racing game.

So what do you guys think? Would you like to see a completely new IP from Yamauchi and crew? Perhaps he’s trapped within his prison of success, like other notable visionaries in the gaming industry?
