Yesterday, August 4th, popular Twitch streamer Kai Cenat held a giveaway at Union Square Park in Manhattan, which quickly devolved into a riot.
With an estimate of up to 5,000 participants, the riot left nine injured and resulted in 65 arrests, and the streamer is now being charged with inciting a riot and unlawful assembly.
While police loaded up the arrested onto a city bus, more rioters attempted to attack it, and tried to pull people off. Until the situation was under control, city train routes avoided the nearby station, and nearby businesses were forced to close early.
Jeffrey Maddrey, chief of the New York Police Department, was also injured during the event and stated afterwards in a press conference that multiple police cars and food carts were destroyed during the riot.
Chief Maddrey has also stated the following: “When I go back later on this evening, I will have an after-action determine exactly what our steps were. We can’t allow this to happen again in the future”.
Cenat later posted a video of ABC7’s coverage of the riot on his Instagram account, but quickly deleted it.
