Junji Ito was Involved with Silent Hills, Says Guillermo del Toro

In a recent tweet by Guillermo del Toro, we’ve learned that Junji Ito was a collaborator in the cancelled PlayStation 4 game, Silent Hills.

He also expressed how he and Kojima were fans of his work. Junji Ito is an incredbibly popular horror mangaka artist, often considered one of the best in Japan.

“Kojima and myself are fans,” said del Toro on Twitter, while posting various art from Ito-san. You can view an example of his artwork featured above, as part of del Toro’s messages on the artist.

It’s sad to see this information spring up now, as it serves as another reminder of what could have been a fantastic Silent Hill game.

Sounds like PT was going to be awesome, as long as Ito wasn’t involved with the ending. Man makes some terrifying stuff but he can’t write a fucking ending to save his life.

So, Konami is now right up there (though they were always pretty close in recent memory) with EA, Ubisoft and Activation as the mustache-twirling villains?

I was only slightly disappointed to see the project being cancelled before, Del Toro is overrated IMHO and I’m not a big fan of Kojima, but after reading this I’m pissed. Junji Ito is the best in the business.

    Nonsense. I call utter nonsense.

Yeah, no. PT was a walking-sim with highest graphical fidelity (on consoles) and jump scares. The ending showed it would be some TV star vehicle, indicating yet AGAIN how much of a rabid Hollywood westaboo Kojima is (as if everything, including MGSV’s choices, didn’t prove this already).

Did you forget the “I’m GONNA BRING MY FRIENDS!” line? Did you forget how bad the trailer ended with what felt like the third installment to the SH movie franchise? Nope. No, I don’t care Kojidrones and I don’t care reactionaries: NOTHING in PT showed anything REMOTELY good enough to have the Ito or DelTorro stamp of creativity, except maybe the Eraserhead baby in the bathroom sink.

Don’t believe the hype for this vaporware. PT was always destined to be a graphics-measuring contest between Kojima’s studio and everyone else. He’s always been that way.

That’s insane. They would not go to the trouble of fabricating all that, announcing a new game, if they did not plan on actually making it. They wouldn’t willingly do something knowing full well what the backlash would be. There’s just no reason for it.

  24. TheCynicalReaper
    September 28, 2015 at 12:54 am

Fabricating what? Nothing even needs to be “fabricated”; more like little nudges and inconsequential lies if anything. This trickle of information about the now defunked game should set off alarms to people to not give it attention because someone clearly wants attention.

What project is Torro working on right now? Do you know?
A new film called “Crimson Peak” that has a HUGE banner on his twitter, a twitter most people wouldn’t check out unless he broadened his account’s viewership by mentioning Silent Hills, thus driving traffic to his account and getting free publicity.

  25. TheCynicalReaper
    September 28, 2015 at 12:56 am

Besides, all we had to begin with are the suggestions and personal ramblings of a Hollywood figure regarding a possible project that was never properly presented or explained (unless Silent Hills actually was going to be a spooky walking simulator, which would not be a big loss then) yet had a lot of attention.

tl;dr GdT is using Silent Hills to get extra attention to drive traffic to his twitter as to promote his upcoming movie and keep himself in the public consciousness. That’s how I see it.

Konami had a potential masterpiece, the planets had aligned and this was going to be the game to shake the genre, the industry, everything.
And they burned it to the ground before it could take off.

Can this be classified as a videogames industry tragedy already?

  29. Reon
    September 28, 2015 at 5:20 am

    They’re different kind of villains.

EA might just be lawful evil. EA buys great companies and franchises, sucks them dry and leaves behind an empty husk after bathing in the profits.

Konami just sorta built something beautiful, then burned it in front of everyone on a cruel whim. We’ve just met the true chaotic evil of the AAA.

I kind of get where Reaper is coming from. I mean I’m pretty sure the final product would have been awesome-sauce but “the demo” just smacked of “Gone Home” with some really disturbing imagery once in awhile.

The “new approach” of just walking around and picking up objects as stuff occasionally happens has not endeared me to the “new direction” of survival horror. I miss the days in which we unlocked new modes, new costumes, new weapons, and even multiple endings without the “One play thru and you’ve seen everything” gimmick. Even Amnesia was lacking in content though it had a few interesting puzzles.

I guess I’m just a dinosaur out of touch with the times. lol. Figures,we all have our “Grandpa Simpson” epiphany at some juncture!
