Now that John Wick 4 is out, tidbits on its production have been trickling out. A new report says not only does star Keanu Reeves have fewer lines, he is dedicated to not speaking much.
The new report (via WSJ) notes that Keanu, who stars as the titular John Wick, cut out “nearly half” of the written dialogue from the initial script with director Chad Stahelski.
Furthermore, in the films 169 minute runtime, Reeves only says 380 words, and 10% of those words have been shown in trailers. Lots of the dialogue, in fact, are one word with Reeves grunting things like “No Quarter” and “Pistol.”
This extremely minimalist approach to dialogue is by design, apparently, as Keanu is “dedicated” to not speaking, according to co-screenwriter Michael Finch.
“It’s a shock when you work with him how dedicated he is to not speaking,” Finch said. The longest line of dialogue in the movie by John Wick is also apparently a single sentence.
John Wick: Chapter 4 just premiered in North American theaters on March 24, 2023.
