Jackbox Party Pack 10 PAX West Preview

With a new year comes a new Jackbox Party Pack game. What has become a fun recurring party game looks to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. In preparation for the game’s upcoming release, Jackbox Games showcased their new game at PAX West 2023. Guests could play the game on the fourth floor of the Seattle Convention Center – Summit building. If players were not able to make it into the game as a player, they could still play as an audience member. For time’s sake, Jackbox Games had the media members meet in a private room on the opposite side of the floor to play each game.

TEE K.O. 2

For the meeting, we got to only play the first part of all of the party games. The games we played were Tee K.O. 2, Fixy Text, Dodo Re Mi, Hypnotorious, and Time Jinx. The beloved T-shirt-making game is back this time with even more clothing options than before. For those who have never played Tee K.O., it was one of the popular games in Jackbox Party Pack 3. In fact, you could save the T-shirt designs to your phone or PC. Occasionally, some players would share those designs online and some would even create the T-Shirts in real life.

In Tee K.O.2, players create images and choose catchphrases that can be put on T-shirts, Hoodies, and Undershirts. The images and phrases are then given to the other players to create special outfits. Once all the outfits are designed, players then vote on the best designs. After all the designs have been gone through, players will then have the chance to modify the previous images and phrases to create new designs. After three rounds, the player who created the best designs wins the game.

While playing through this game, some of the most simple designs paired with the cheesiest lines won each round. It will be interesting to see how creatives vs slapstick players will battle it out.

Developer’s Description

Tee K.O. 2 (Drawing, Writing) (20 Mins): In Tee K.O. 2, return to T-Shirt Island, where the most hardened warriors in the world compete in a deadly fighting tournament. The drawing finger – not the fist – decides the victory! Tee K.O. 2 supports 3-8 players.

Fixy Text

In the second game mode, Fixy Text, players are given a prompt and a text to start working with. Once the prompt is given, it is up to a team of crack texting engineers to compose the best text possible to achieve the objective; however, there is one massive twist, each player receives a certain point within the text message to start working. Once you begin texting, you can’t stop; there is no backspace or delete button so everything is permanent. Players have two options, monitor what others are texting or go off on their own rant within the text and hope it all makes sense. Once the allotted time is done, the game reads out the text. Players who did not participate in preparing the text then vote on their favorite words or phrases.

In our attempt at Fixy Text, a threat of shoving a plumber down the pipes like Mario and Luigi was mentioned. Ultimately, the goal was to get the unsolicited plumber to go away. With not knowing where other people would insert text, you could only guess what might be said.

FixyText (Writing, Teamwork): FixyText is the Wild West of text-editing. In this chaotic game, everyone’s in a group chat, typing all at once to make the most memorable statement. And there’s no delete key. Take that auto-correct! FixyText supports 3-8 players.

Dodo Re Mi

After Fixy Text, we were shown Dodo Re Mi. At the start of the game, players are given the option to choose what musical instrument they want to play; players can choose the difficulty of the instrument. Once everyone has locked in their instrument and its difficulty, players vote on what song they want to play. Once the song has been selected, a rhythm game will appear on the screen and players will need to tap on their phone when the note crosses the line. Before the song begins players get the chance to calibrate the game in order to make it easier to hit notes. Once the song has been completed, players points are tallied and you can see who hit the most notes. Once everything is tallied, the notes are used to fight against the enemy monster. Score enough points and survive; score too low and be eaten.

When playing the game in a room with one another, hitting the notes can sound comedic and off. Once all the notes were put together, it was easier to hear the song.

Dodo Re Mi (Music, Teamwork): In Dodo Re Mi, your phone is your instrument. You and your flock must make music together to escape the hungry jungle plant. Dodo Re Mi supports 1-9 players

Hypnotorious

After dying to the monster in Dodo Re Mi, we swapped over to Hypnotorious. At the start of the game, we were all given a prompt of what item we had become. With the item in mind, we were given a prompt and then had to answer it as our items. Based on the clues, players had to guess which player was the outlier and figure out what jar they belonged in. If the outlier survived the players lost the game. For our play session, we were given items that belonged to Christmas, Halloween, or Weddings. Despite being given clues to figure out who was the imposter, the imposter managed to escape. Playing a game of deception while trying to figure out who the imposter is was a fun game of cat and mouse.

Developer’s Description

Hypnotorious (Hidden Identity, Roleplaying): Hypnotorious is a game with secret roles, tentative alliances and of course, silly answers to ridiculous questions. Who is on your side? Hypnotorious supports 4-8 players.

Time Jinx

After completing the Hypnotorious round, we tried out Time Jinx. In Time Jinx, players are thrown back in time and must blend in order to not be found out. In each round, players are asked a question and they must figure out what year they are in; players are given clues to help them figure out what year they are in. The further away they are from the correct year the more points they get; the lower the score, the better you are doing. As the rounds go on, players can lower their scores by answering questions correctly. In another round, you are given a year and must figure out what item or event aligns with the year so that you can blend in.

Developer’s Description

In Timejinx, you’re a time traveler from the future competing in a high-stakes trivia night. Save your current timeline by answering questions about the past. Timejinx supports 1-8 players.

Overall, Jackbox Party Pack 10 seems to have a great line-up of game modes for players to enjoy. Each game mode has its own unique feeling and can appeal to a wide variety of gamers. At the moment there is no official release date for Jackbox Party Pack 10 but it is expected to be released either in October or November of 2023.
