It Seems Like Ys The Ark of Napishtim is Coming to PC via Steam

It seems like XSEED is bringing Falcom’s Ys: The Ark of Napishtim to PC, via Steam.

The news comes via (thanks, NeoGAF) XSEED’s recent New Year’s teaser, which featured several silhouettes of various artwork featured in a myriad of Japanese games.

If you look closely at the second to the last silhouette, you’ll notice it appears to be a character with spiky hair, and a sword. It turns out that wasn’t a sword, but a polearm, wielded by Geis, a reoccurring character in the series:

Ys: The Ark of Napishtim originally launched on the PC in Japan back in 2003, only to later be ported to Playstation 2 in 2005 and even later to the PSP in 2006. The only platforms to get the game in English thusfar are the PS2 and PSP releases.

Coming from this, it makes sense this will be a Steam release, much like their Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin releases on Steam. For now, we’ll categorize this under a rumor, as we don’t know the true nature of XSEED’s motives with Ys: The Ark of Napishtim.

It’s worth noting the first silhouette was also proven to be one of the heroines from Marvelous’ Forbidden Magna, which XSEED recently set up a domain for Lord of Magna.

So what could the other silhouettes be? We’ll keep you guys posted.

Great! Napishtim was better than Origin IMO, and definitely has the best Atmosphere of all the games in the series using this engine.

Well they don’t take terribly long to beat at least. It really sucks when you have a bunch of RPGs on your backlog lol

Lets hope that this will mean Xseed got the rights from konami for the ps2 and psp versions too. I need AoN on psn!

Trails in the Sky is on GOG and Gamersgate, so I doubt any future PC releases are Steam only. This hasn’t even been an official announcement yet.

True, but as of right now all the Ys games have been steam-exclusive. I doubt that’ll change anytime soon. Unless the official announcement also includes that they’ll be selling the rest of the localized series on other digital fronts – then I’ll promptly eat my own words.

XSEED has actually shown some initiative on that front when they put Ys Origin in a bundle at Humble Bundle, which was DRM-free. So I have very little doubt that the Ys games will end up in other digital distributors at some point.

I think it’s still in the store, though I haven’t checked if you can play it in the Vita.

They’re not that bad, just play them on normal. The boss fights can be challenging but they’re fair, no cheap deaths or anything. And when you die you can immediately retry the fight, no fighting your way back to the boss. nnnOnce you learn the pattern needed you’ll win, and you’ll feel like you earned it too.

Forgot about that. In which case I can’t help but wonder what’s taking them so long in the first place. I know nothing about that process of digital distribution but it doesn’t seem like it should take them 6-7 months for a release.nnnAh well. It’s definitely not a deal-breaker, Ys is pretty great all on it’s own.

I remember when I played this on the PS2. The characters were great. The fights were so fun. I remember that fight early on when you’re falling down a platform and have to fight some bird or bat thing and realizing for the first time how awesome the music was. The world was so vast and fun to explore and yet so frustrating at a lot of the way the roads were made that you’d have to abuse the lightning sword’s thrust to get through some of them. Then there was grinding for emelas to beat the bonus boss. And after I was done with everything, I went on to fight the final boss. After beating it and while watching the final cutscene….it hanged. All the time.nnAnd that’s why I don’t pirate anymore. By the way, will that fairy thing in Alma’s challenges or whatever be in? I remember her from the PS2 version but she was removed from the PSP version.
