Legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden has filed a lawsuit against Ion Maiden, a throwback FPS by publisher 3D Realms and developer Voidpoint.

The new lawsuit (via The Daily Beast), filed by Iron Maiden’s holding company, is seeking $2 million in trademark infringement against the game. Iron Maiden is saying 3D Realms is conducting “incredibly blatant” trademark infringement, which could lead to “confusion among consumers.”

They add, “Defendant’s Ion Maiden name is nearly identical to the Iron Maiden trademark in appearance, sound and overall commercial impression. Defendant also uses the Ion Maiden name to sell merchandise including shirts and mouse pads.”

Furthermore, Iron Maiden notes they’ve sold video games in the past. The holding company alleges that 3D Realms have engaged in federal trademark infringement and unfair competition, among other claims, for the “virtually identical imitation” of the band’s trademark.

Lastly, Iron Maiden’s lawsuit demands 3D Realms and Voidpoint stop using the “confusingly similar” product naming, and give up their ownership of the web domain ionmaiden.com.

Ion Maiden was planned for a full release in Q2 of this year – that’s likely not going to happen now that this lawsuit has come up.
