While point and click adventure games are back in vogue now, they are mostly based on established properties (Borderlands, Walking Dead, Game of thrones) or are HD remakes of the genre’s forefathers (Grim Fandango, Shadowgate) and may or may not bring anything new to the formula, depending on your idea of new. Tormentum, a new adventure game that was successfully funded on IndieGogo, seems to be more in line of what I think when someone says “new”.
Inspired by the art of H.R. Giger, the game looks suitably freakish and disquieting. With blood, scenes of impaling, eyes following you around, and angel statues being worshiped by zombies, it reminds me of other adventure classics from the past such as D’s Diner and Phantasmagoria. The flesh-covered trains and bony fingers reaching out to grab you from behind the corner are just icing on an already delightfully hideous looking cake.
Tormentum hits Steam next on March 4th, but if you’re feeling brave, a demo is up on their store page.
