Introducing New Mech Strategy Game, Dual Gear

If you love gigantic mechs, strategic gameplay, or you just want something PC-based that brings back the same combination of action and strategy you remember from the Armored Core series, then Thailand-based developer Orbital Speed’s new game Dual Gear is something you may want to look into.

Powered by the new Unreal Engine, Dual Gear combines strategy and third person shooting action into one cohesive package, with its designers hoping to create a very in-depth simulation of mech-based combat. It’s fairly evident they’re doing a good job, especially when one looks at the game’s user interface…which is impressive for a non-AAA studio.

Dual Gear is a turn-based game, but allows for free movement during turns using an action point system, giving it a hybrid action/strategy type of gameplay that – according to the developer and the game’s many videos – is intended to create a very cinematic look to its combat.

If you wish to support them, the developer has just started an indiegogo campaign, as well as a plea for votes on Steam Greenlight. You can also track Orbital Speed’s progress via the game’s official Twitter feed.

Dual Gear will release for Windows, Mac, Xbox One, and PS4 in the first quarter of 2017.

This looks like the Front Mission that Evolved should have been. This is definitely on my radar.

oh that’s pretty cool. i didn’t like valkyria chronicles, but that was ages ago that i played.

so i might try that style out again with this
(or maybe i’m a sucker for mecha and that’s why i’m willing to try again)

Warning: The pre-alpha has some google-translated level of engrish going on.

Just as well, hopefully they’ll make it. I love Front Mission and Valkyria Chronicles, so this is a no-brainer when/if it comes out.

The Front Mission spiritual sequel we all been waiting for! Add some good writing and axe the voice acting, more excuses of longer story (ala FM3 – ok that might be too long!)

Very impressive. I might thought this was from AAA studio If the article didn’t point it out~

Throw in modding support for maximum longevity. Hoo boy…

They clearly still need to work out a few issues like enemy AI. It’s interesting though that the sword’s range is the blade itself since the turrets were too low for it to hit. I think the only things that really bother me are the lack of counter attacks which were in both FM and VK, and the lack of player unit interception during enemy turns.

But that aside, it looks great for a pre-alpha.

Do you think Evolved is worth trying at all for someone who really loves mech games?

I ran into this not long ago on moddb but didn’t get a chance to really look at it then. Glad to see it here. They’re not asking for much money, but IGG isn’t as popular as Kickstarter and their cheapest tier is 30 dollars, so I’m a bit worried about their chances of success. Hopefully it all works out and we get an excellent game out of it.

Despite how my initial comment sounded, I actually enjoyed Evolved. It wasn’t a good FM game, but it was a decent distraction for how dirt cheap I bought it for.

I could see your enjoyment going either way, honestly. The story and characters are weak. The TPS segments when you’re out of your mech are awful and unwelcome, but I enjoy any game that offers me even a bit of mech customization, so it scratched that itch at the very least.

It helped that I had a friend to co-op with and play online when online was still active.
