If you read that headline, you’re probably wondering how Interplay is still around as a publisher. Now, the company is readying (via Nasdaq) to sell off a multitude of its most classic intellectual properties – meaning this could be it for the company.

Included with the range of game properties are the likes of: Battle Chess, Boogerman, Clay Fighter, Dark Alliance, Descent, Earthworm Jim, Freespace, Kingpin, M.A.X., Messiah, MDK, Redneck Rampage, Run Like Hell, Sacrifice, T-Rex Rumble, and Giants.

It’s worth mentioning the entire number of IPs being sold off is roughly 70 in total.

“With the proliferation of mobile, augmented reality, virtual reality and other new forms of consumption, we believe that consumers are ready to experience and interact with Interplay’s characters, stories and game play in ways never possible before,” Interplay CEO Eric Caen said in a press release.

Earthworm Jim creator Doug TenNapel shared his thoughts regarding the auction: “Fans deserve a proper Earthworm Jim cartoon/game/toy but I assume it will go to a business that thinks EWJ is just a title and not a method.”

Interplay was founded back in 1983 by Brian Fargo, Troy Worrell, Jay Patel and Bill Heineman. Then known as Interplay Productions, they went on to create iconic properties like Baldur’s Gate, the Fallout series, and more.
