Insomniac Games Reveal Song of the Deep, Published by GameStop

Insomniac Games have revealed their new game – titled simply Song of the Deep.

The game is described as a metroidvania-styled action-adventure game, where you control a young girl as she journeys underwater to find her missing father. Featured above, you can view the game’s debut trailer.

It’s worth mentioning that GameStop is publishing the game, and physical copies will only be available through the retailer.

Song of the Deep will launch across PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime this summer.

Doesn’t even look worth the trouble of getting a physical copy.

I wonder if Gamestop will also take new copies of this game and sell them as used so they make 100% profit on it.

But the game looks kinda neat. It certainly looks pretty. Doesn’t look like a “I need a physical copy now” sort of game though. At least not for me.

I’d make a snarky comment in regards to how uninteresting it looks, but I feel like Insomniac speaks for themselves when they stopped making 60fps games years ago.

I remember playing this game 8 years ago when it was called Aquaria. In all seriousness, this could be cool, but I failed to see any mechanics in the trailer that make the game stand out from the billion other metroidvanias out there.

Reminds me of another game that is/was on XBLA (PSN?), it looked just as boring as this one. And fuck Gamestop.

This looks really bland. Just play Insanely Twisted Planet, Aquaria or Ori and the Blind Forest if you looking for something similar but far more interesting. I’d suggest Undertow too, but that game wasn’t exactly stellar.

And GameStop on to Publishing now? Yeah just what we needed, another company with anti-consumer practices entering the fray. Hopefully they will stick to smaller titles like this one.

I dunno, this definitely seems like an improvement over making the same bland Ratchet and Clank games over and over again. Although I gotta say that Sunset Overdrive looked legitimately fun enough, but also fastpaced enough that I’d need it to run at 60fps.

They only got away with it with Xenoblade because the Wii had no integrated digital distribution but since this is on Steam too that will act as a great deterrent.

Interesting, people are saying this is bland. Hmmm…

To me it looks fine, although I’m not really into these type of games anyway.

Could be fun. Reminds me of Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet and Aquaria.

I’m kinda shocked how average this game looks, coming from a dev like Insomniac. The presentation is nice, I guess, but other than that this screams 10€ PSN/XBLA indie title at best.

Good to see even Gamestop of all companies embrace digital downloads like this, shows that they know where the future is and how to keep from fading into irrelevancy.

Gotta say, after playing Aquarius, water-based metroidvanias are really, really boring. Can’t say I’m looking forward to this one.

Soooo in addition to the already mentioned Aquaria we also have some The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human thrown in?

The submarine parts don’t look fun to play. I guess there is always Abzu for an underwater exploration game.

The downward spiral continues for Insomniac,I kind of feel sorry for them at this point.

You bring up a good point deadeye. Gamestop has ore control over the process, so it’s easier to get some copies “off the books” and put them straight into the used bin.
I’m on edge with everything in the industry right now, and I’d seriously expect them to pull this off.

But the game does look interesting. Hope it’s price matches what it can do.

I’ll admit i’m still sour that Sunset Overdrive was sent to die on the Xbox One, but at least when I look at that game, I can see it being made at a studio like Insomniac. This? Not at all.

Know what will be funny? if this chump change spare time side project runs at 30fps. Because it shows they’ve really stopped caring.

Everything is relative. DmC is actually great as far as combat goes in comparison to most action games, East or west.

It shows up as poor when compared to Capcom’s DMC as well as rivals.

This? It is no Spyro. Ratchet and Clank. Sunset Overdrive… Or even Resistance.

Even the blander of the four series had a 3D environment worth exploring and a ton of weapons worth getting excited for. The developer’s name raises expectations.

The sub gameplay reminds me of the underwater segments in Crash Bandicoot. The size discrepancy between the sub and her swimming is jarring. Looks like it could be fun, GameStop publishing is interesting. Not much to say about this one except wait and see.

I expected much better from Insomniac Games. I wonder if they try to jump on the hype train indie games get lately. Not interested in most indie games and not in this one either.
