IDW Publishing New Sonic the Hedgehog Comic Series, Launches April 2018

This is Niche Culture. In this column, we regularly cover anime, geek culture, and things related to video games. Please leave feedback and let us know if there’s something you want us to cover!

Sega previously confirmed they’re handing over the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series to IDW Comics, as they ended the publishing deal with Archie Comics. Now, they’ve announced the release window for the new series.

The new comic series will launch in April of next year – news confirmed at this year’s New York Comic-Con. IDW also confirmed there will be a new issue of the comic every week for the first month of its release.

Ian Flynn, the original writer for the Archie Comics Sonic the Hedgehog publication, is returning to write this new series. Tyson Hesse, the guy behind the opening animation of Sonic Mania, isn’t returning for the interior art duties but he did provide the above promo image.

The latest game in the series, Sonic Forces, launches on November 7th in North America and Europe across PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. The precursor to Sonic ForcesSonic Mania, is available now for PC, Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. In case you missed it, you can find my review for that game here (I absolutely love and recommend the game!).

Finally, the comics shall be freed from the phantom of Ken Penders.

IDW just saved from oblivion. And I’m glad to know that the comic won’t suck thanks to Ian still being on board.

Shame Tyson isn’t doing all the art, but hope whoever they do hire is up to snuff.
The archie comics had a wild ride (rose in popularity, a golden era, a nose-dive, then it picked up again before being canned), and with Ian at the helm (who is quite popular with his work IIRC) he should be experienced enough to do good things.

I was never that into the comics because the continuity was all over the place, just like pretty much all long running comics. A fresh start is just the thing I needed.

Still miffed about Mega Drive tho’

IDW was sinking into oblivion because they were following the SJW nonsense such as introducing “trans-transformers” and spouting stupid crap on twitter. Getting the sonic license isn’t a guarantee they’ll survive with a 91% decrease in readership.

Making a comic like Mega Drive should have been their top priority, they sold very well and generated lots of positive buzz. Hopefully it’s still in the cards.

True, they’ll at least be on life support with Sonic being the only reason they’re still around.

I expect Ian will go wild with it too, he was a fan of shipping BS and tired to ship Sally and Nicole (the computer from Satam, Ian gave her a original the character furry body) and IIRC rambled on Twitter about it being for diversity.

IDW has the comics rights to everyones childhood these days. If it wasn’t for Disney buying up Lucasfilm and/or Marvel, they probably would’ve ended up with Star Wars too.

How the fuck have I not seen this idea? I can’t imagine the salt this generated from the IDW writers.

But not from the phantom of Ian Flynn, the guy who made it his top priority to make his OTP official and just couldn’t stop himself from writing Sonic as a jerkass.

Actually Mega Drive did badly from what I heard since Archie didn’t do a lot of advertisement for them nor sold them through stores.

So they decided to hand the writing department of the comic over to the guy who wrote a version Sonic that trash talked his friends behind their, couldn’t function without being a gurls arm candy and who took delight in the suffering of an enemy?

The guy who thinks Sonic thinks of Tails in this way?

The same guy who blamed everything not liked in the comic on SEGA and mandates, mandates that funnily enough could always be broken when it involved his Mary Sue character, the one who just couldn’t help himself from writing characters he didn’t like as horribly as possible and then bragged about it in an editorial note. The very guy who decided to create a LGBTQ+ sub plot without checking with SEGA/Archie if it was okay to do so just because his wife wanted it.

Everyone says his writing picked up post reboot, yet post reboot he wasn’t headwriter and SEGA had taken to monitoring everything in the comic to ensure it stayed within guideline, so make of that what you will.

And let’s no forget Ian Flynn’s run saw the comic book readers number reduced from a grand 20000 to around 5500 at the time of cancellation over a ten year period, so clearly the majority of the readers had some issues with the “best” Sonic writer to date.

Smart choice IDW, really smart choice.

If anyone missed it, I really hated Ian Flynns writing in the end, so I’ll be passing on this comic.

I’ve been waiting to see a post like this, I think he’s overhyped and bland and will get even worse under IDW before even finally starts to write him off just like they did that asshat Penders. I’d like to know more about him bragging about writing characters he didn’t like, I’m guessing he’d flip his shit if this was done to his beloved Satam characters or his Mary Sue furry Nicole.
I like Sonic to be a bit of asshole but the characterization in that page is terrible.

If you have Soni University ossie 1 you can a small mention from him that he doesn’t like Marine the Raccoon but thinks she’s fun to write about.

Of course to him, fun is writing her as a retard that can’t do anything right even if it contradicts the facts that was presented about her in the Sonic Rush Adventure game which he implied had also happened in the same way in the comic.

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Female_Transformer#IDW_Generation_1_continuity They had Jihaxus introduce “pronouns” with him experimenting on Arcee to create “Gender identity”. IDW also had inserted Gay relationships into the comic series such as Onslaught and Blastoff, which is partly disturbing because they combine with 3 other Decepticons as part of a Gestalt.

The head Writter is Ian Flynn, who had an all but stellar run when he was doing the comics for Archie.
Seriously, this guy is the best writter to ever grace any media in the Sonic franchise, So I wouldn’t worry about any of that.

  42. HappyZombie
    October 16, 2017 at 12:06 pm

Ah… no. I can’t agree on that. Ian made so many stupid stories like “House of Cards” or the whole Mobius crap. This is why I never got a fan of the SATM series, because it was nothing like the games. In no shape or form.

Ian had one job; to make a story about the game Sonic the Hedgehog and what did he? A story, where the reader felt that Sonic was just a guest star and love interest of every female character. And now, he will write for IDW and we all know how this will end if we look at Ghostbusters, MASK, TMNT and especially Trans-Transformers. I’m so glad that Sega does not allow him to write for their games… that would be the complete downfall for me.

I see a lot of people bring up House of Cards as an example of bad writting, and while I agree it’s not one of his best works, I don’t think he’s entirely to blame for it, as that was his attempt to mend Sonic and Tails friendship after Ken Penders made Sonic cuck Tails with Fiona Fox. sure, he could have done better, but I still think he managed to do a good job having the two of them making up feel natural. Also, what’s this story you’re talking about were “it felt that Sonic was just a guest star and love interest of every female character.”?

While I didn’t mind the romance, I can see why people wouldn’t like it, and they DID get rid of all romantic elements in the story after the reboot. (which also made the world much closer to the games, if you haven’t checked that yet).

Still, look at how he handled most of the characters: he managed to make Eggman feel like a legitimate threat and even be intimidating at points while still keeping him somewhat comedic: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/9mgd7kSjPwHqQ5LsRqInVfgb0-0xI59u4CvfFn6FRp3S18ZXmSoECo1iCwjid4XC9sAvIGJqag9a=s1600

He’s pretty much the only one who still remembers Knuckles’s role as guardian of the Master Emerald, and doesn’t write him like a brainless idiot, Instead he respects the character and keeps him true to his original personality; a guy with a strong sense of duty but who’s hot headed and makes brash decisions:

and I like how he writes Sonic flawed, yet still likable, Sonic is cocky and he has a big ego, but in the comics it’s not obnoxious and overblown like, say, Colors or Lost World (in which he’s basically an arrogant prick who laughs at his own jokes and 3 out of every 2 words he says and annoying one-liners and puns). I don’t have it on me right now, but one good example of this is how he handled Sonic’s transformation into the Werehog, Sonic inhales the Dark Gaia Energy while saving Uncle chuck but just coughs it out and plays it off saying that it’s nothing, he then gradually shows traits of being corrupt by the energy when he’s put under dangerous circumstances (like lamost drowning, being overpowered by an Enemy, etc). he eventually gets pushed to his limit and transform.
What I liked about that arc is that he attributes Sonic’s transformation to his lack of control: Sonic is a free spirited guy, he values freedom above anything else (Free as the Wind! as he mentions in Black Knight) and Control is something that rejects to his very core. and he has to learn to overcome that in order to overcome his state.

  44. HappyZombie
    October 17, 2017 at 10:53 am

The Archie comics may be as successful as they were, but for me, it was just bad fan fic. Forcing to coupling Sonic with Sally, making Sonic and Tails fight over a girl, the Mina Mongoose fiasco… To me, and only to me, they tried to make something so badly, which had no connection to the game canon whatsoever. That is why I don’t want ANY writer of the Archie Comics time for this new comic, because I fear, that the whole Mobius-Sally-Reboot whenever you want-insanity will return. Ian and the others had their chance and, again in my view, failed badly.

  45. HappyZombie
    October 17, 2017 at 11:04 am

I believe that Sega will keep a very open eye on Ian not to ruin the main canon as so many tried.
